My entry (I can't join but you'll get the idea:D )

I've shared the Facebook post!

The most memorable failure was partially caused by drunking and reefing. I was doing my normal nightly chores and saw ALK was a little low, it's pretty typical for me to top ALK up once every couple weeks. Easy enough to use the Apex to manually turn on the ALK pump and let it run for 10 minutes. Well, I was easily sidetracked and forgot it was on, soon after I went to bed. I wake up and hit the floor! The tank was a wintery day in January, calcium snow was everywhere. Luckily my dosing container was low and it eventually ran out of ALK.

ok, thread is open for entry... Let's hear your stories :)

1,2,&3 done! Thanks again Crued for the generous giveaways.

Most memorable failure was when I got my first skimmer. An SCA-301(I think). Being the idiot I am I opened it up and started setting it up without reading directions. Keep in mind this was my first time handling one of these, but I hooked up the hose from the pump to the drain port. So the pump ended up sucking up everything in the collection cup. Suddenly my crappy parameters made sense.

The greatest hardship i have had in this tank is when i rushed my first build and ended up getting Ick and it wiped out my entire tank. That was a pretty sad day, and I knew the fish were sick but didn't have the knowledge to help them or a QT tank to try to save them. I felt pretty horrible about that, but for sure it was a learning experience to say the least.

My biggest fail was recently... washed my filter socks in washing machine, double rinse, the whole thing. Socks were dried, smelled neutral, ready to rock. Put the socks in the sump, go about some work... come down to basement and scent of detergent is in air. Go and see the sump and the drain crash area is overflowing with soap suds and skimmer, well, you get the picture. It wasn't soap, it was the washing machine cleaner residue still trapped in the bowels of the washer. Why it attached to the socks, and not my actual socks, I'll never understand.

I had no water made as I had just done a WC that morning. I threw a few filter bags of carbon in the sump and made some phone calls. A local LFS had 60 gallons ready to go. $150 and 30 min later I'm carrying 12 x 5 gallon jugs from my driveway, into house, and down to basement (my display is on first floor, but its far too high to get a big 5 gallon jug up to dump in).

Nothing died, but it was a horrible day.

Most memorable failure was doing a water change on my old 30 gallon with a hang on back drain. I didn't restart the siphon in the U-tube and started up the return pump and walked away from the tank thinking all was good. 10 minutes later I had about 5 gallons of saltwater all over my room and some getting into the power strip and almost starting a fire. This is why I only have drilled tanks now lol.

Im not in this but ill participate in the story part

My most memorable failure? Do i have to pick 1 lol. Theres 3. The ich outbreak in my 120 when i first started because wtf is quarintining fish. The diy overflow i built that worked great for 2 months then lost siphon 2 seperate times emptying my 10 gallon sump onto the floor. And last but not least my aefw crash last year because i didnt dip anything. All lessons learned

Facebook shared. I'm in.
Worst time for me in this hobby is when my heater failed and crashed my tank. That was a few years ago. killed all my SPS corals. My tank has since recovered and now I use safety features (controller) to prevent that from happening again.

Write a short bit about the GREATEST HARDSHIP you suffered in this hobby. It can be a hard topic to talk about, but maybe someone else can learn before it happens to them. - Well the first one was when I was still doing freshwater. Was out of town for the weekend, and came home to a tank full of dead fish. Turned out the heater shorted out and was heating the water to 100+ degrees. I learned from this when I started saltwater to make sure I run a controller.

For saltwater my greatest hardship was when I first got ich, and lost most of my fish within a month of starting. It was terrible, I just started my 75g tank and got it up and running, and ich took out everything. I learned to QT new fish after that.

Very generous Crued!

My most memorable failure was setting up my Apex dosers on non mechanical relays. Tested them through a few cycles and then left them be. The next morning I was looking over the tank and realized my tricolor was not looking to great. I look over to my dosing containers and my calcium was down to about the 150ml mark.... Around 100ml had dumped in. I was able to correct a minor swing in alk and abnormally high calcium with a large WC but lost my tricolor

I bought a EB4 and now use that for the dosers and make sure to always inform people who are setting up new Apex systems of this issue with low wattage equipment.

Probably the worst thing that has happened to me is flooding the whole basement with RODI water. Forgot to turn it off before bed. The second I woke up the first thing that poped into my head is RODI!!!.. Ran down and basement was soooo flooded. Thank god I had not finished my basement yet. Didnt even tell the Wife. Got out of work early and cleaned that up real fast. heh.. Never again, now I have a Float switch

Greatest hardship for me would be the time I went on a work trip forgetting I recently changed both my powerheads wp25 on highest setting in a 75g, coming back home to see a big hole of sand in the middle and bunch of corals in the sandbed get buried. Including my gold torch.

Done done and done,

My greatest hardship with a reef tank is still currently a problem lol. After 3.5 years i still chase my alk/calc levels and i still haven't gotten my dosing down to being perfect. Mostly because i hardly ever test lol. Sooooo many lost corals over the years.

Done and done.

Greatest hardship is when my nano tank leaked in the middle of the night and waking up to water dripping sound. Without any spare tanks, I had to dump everything into a plastic tub for weeks. Lost a few corals during the time and gave away all my SPS frags.

Fb shared awesome giveaway!
My greatest hardship and big lesson is to all that I meet is if you have the means to do so always quarantine your fish no matter what, where or who you buy your fish from. I learned the hard way and lost all my fish this way. The worst part was losing my 8 year old pair of clowns. I take it at a lessened learned and a year and a half later decided to start fresh, upgrade to a 150 and do it all right this time. So sometimes out of hardship comes an opurtunity.

The greatest hardship i had in this hobby is when i encountered those blood sucking Isopods a few years back and lost a few fish, caught them around 3 am in the morning, catch the clown that was attacked and pull that bug with a pair of tweezers. Followed by 100% rock and water change that week. could never forget that picture of clown in my head
