2,000 Dead Seahorses!

They use Seahorses in Chinese medicine. Their was a PBS shows "Kingdom of the Seahorse" about this years ago.

I won't say I agree with it by a long shot, but if they are in fact for medicine and this isn't affecting the population, then I really dont have much of an arguement. The fact they were smuggled is where my arguement would be. I guarantee they wiped out a significant part of a population for that many and there is no regulation to make sure the population can recover before being depleted again.

Yes it is sad, but as long as its regulated i dont see it being much of a problem. If we think about it, how many fish we dont take from the reef our self's.

Really? Some of you actually think that Chinese "medicine" is legitimate. The rationale that it's okay, because it is used for medicine is laughable. Powered rhino horn anyone? How about some medicinal bear gall bladder?

I think its sad. That's why you should watch "Kingdom of the Seahorse", you can get it on amazon. Its old(1997) but very good.
Its crazy how many millions of Seahorse die for Chinese "medicine". They use them for Erectile dysfunction.

that's such a naive thought. You really consider the Chinese medicine illegal, because those horses are cute.
Only certain types of horses are used for medication which are not endangered and are legal. There is no much difference compare to you eating fish or shrimp. Plus in Asian there are tons of fish farms raising them. So the demand for wild has been reduced.

And keep in mind, China is not the only country using the traditional medication. Both south and north Korean, Japan, 10 southeastern Asian countries are all still using it. If you consider this is laughable here in America, simply because you are not fimilar with it. Then sadly, in those Asian country, you will be the one to be laughed at.

I'm not saying it's right, what I am saying is I'm not one to criticize or judge someone for what they believe is right, that's where my argument and any other would fall apart. I don't want to see birds die either, but I happen to like chicken.

I believe my post above said its the means not the ends that I consider wrong.

Apparently, the news reporter has never been to Chinatown. You will find huge Jars of this stuff. 2,000 is not a lot. Plus, the word "endangered" is not used in the official context.

I think there are worse applications of Chinese medicine/cuisine such as tiger penis and bird's nest soup. Who doesn't love tigers? Though it is hard to question a culture that was using toilet paper and having multi-course meals, when most of the world used leaves and ate from a barbecue spit. Not in the same order, hopefully.

I'm no sociologist. But, the Chinese may still be ahead of us evolutionary (as backward as they may SEEM). We have our own issues of concentration of wealth and dumbing down of the general population.

Chris, you are correct. I should not have singled out China. I should have said traditional Asian medicine. But, I stand by my assertion that the use of dried, powdered, and/or ground animal parts as medicine, does not work. There is no scientific evidence that any of the treatments using animal parts is effective at treating any disease or condition. Sadly, it is a major cause of extinction for some unfortunate animal species.
