33 Gallon Long Reef Tank

Hi guys, just started a 33 gallon long reef tank after being out of the hobby for a few years. All of my previous tanks were nano reefs so this is about 3 times as large as my last tank ;)

It's been running w/ LR for about a month, finally got the light in the other day. Right now it has about 17lbs of live rock, cleanup crew, a power head and a fuge modded AC50. I still need to get chaeto and a clip on LED light for that.

Can't wait to get started! Anyone in Chicago have some hardy corals they can frag? Like to start with mushrooms, zoos, or pulsing xenia. Something simple and tolerant.

I plan to keep only soft corals, a couple clowns, and may another fish or two.

Also, not quite sure what I want to do as far as a skimmer or any other filtration yet.

I've always liked that size tank.i got some zoas and I'm in chicago pm if interested and ill let u know what I have.

Hey Jon looking good ! I have some Red Sea Xenia and some zoas you can have. Lmk , I live in melrose but go into north side of city daily.

If u wanna come out west to the burbs I can set you up with all kinds of softies. Kenya, cauliflower, elephant ear, some nice spotted mushrooms. Got plenty of loose frag buds I can scoop up and bag for ya. Maybe even some zoa/paly freebies if your nice.

I have been busy with a newborn, but did set up a hang on fuge in the back. I also added several corals since last time. I need to pick up some chaeto to try to get rid of this pest algae and cyano, does anyone in Chicago have any extra?

Thanks!

I love that size of that, Maybe try adding an extra power head. One might be to little and you can always purchase GFO or purigen and pop that into the HOB filter.

Cyano is very common in new tanks. Here is a helpful link of all kinds of nuisance algae: https://www.reefcleaners.org/aquarium/nuisance-algae-id-guide. Mine got worse before it got better. Another PH might be in order or just one larger one, instead of two smaller ones. Ultimately is comes down to a nutrient issue, a skimmer or more water changes will help. Give your system time to balance out before you start using chemicals to try and fight it. As far as chaeto, go under the free or wtb section in marketplace and ask. I think you might have more success there. It is given away for free on a regular basis here.

very nice dimensions on that tank! But is that a marineland reef led that i spy? Good luck with that....I've been using it on my 20Long and its not nearly enough for some corals....I'm looking to replace mine.

Thanks guys, I found out Jules pet shop sells chaeto, and they are only a few block from my place, I picked up some yesterday. I still need to add another power head, hopefully will have a chance to buy one this weekend.

It's not the marineland, its an aquatraders light. The light is decent, not great, but it has one thing going for it: it was cheap. Less than half of the marineland

Hey Jason, my girlfriend did buy this for me, so I assume it is your old tank, its working out well so far

Hey Chad, awesome, good to know there are other hobbyists nearby.
