40B build suggestions

With the petco $1 a gallon sale i now have a 40B and 20L. I plan on setting up a fowlr for my son in his room. So far i have the tanks, eshopps s-150 skimmer, eheim 1262 return pump, glass-holes 700gph overflow kit with 2 - 1/2" returns, hydor koralia nano 425gph.

was thinking of getting the brs dual reactor for gfo and carbon, also would like to squeeze some sort of ato in there as well.

what heater should i go with? kind of a dumb question but i don't want to overlook anything

i've never used a sump/fuge. i've read a lot but with the 20L i'm limited on space. with 10" used for skimmer compartment by the time i add baffles i'm down to about 16" of usable space. i've read no less than 8" for return which leaves 8" for refugium. is that enough?

i was planning on(from left to right) chamber one being skimmer. chamber two return. chamber 3 refugium. i was thinking of teeing off the return or possibly the drain from the dt using a gate to slow the flow through the refugium.

i appreciate all your help

thanks, mike

Are you setting up a fish only, or reef tank? If it's fish only, I wouldn't worry much about the gfo/carbon reactors and fuge area. You are good to go with the equipment you've got, most don't even use a skimmer on a fish only system, so you are ahead of the game.

Sounds like a good plan. I would put calves on both the drain and return so you can cut off flow if you need to. As far as heater, look for a controllable one so it turns of at a certain temp and you don't over heat in the warmer months. Good luck with the build

Your pump is a little too much for your system, you will have to throttle it back a little. Just make sure to install a ball valve after the output.

i'm starting it off fowlr. my son would like corals but he needs to prove he can take care of them. he has had a 10 gallon freshwater tank for 3 years and the only thing i do is clean the tank and do water changes. the only fish that have died were when the cheap heater mafunctioned and heated the wwater upto 89 degrees. i was amazed that 2 fish survived.
with this tank i'm going to get him more involved with the care of it. plus this cures my itch for the huge tank i want in my basement that i shouldn't be spending money on.
so yes fish only for now. i guess i can add the reactors later just really don't want to work so hard on controlling algae.

mmreef,

i thought so too. whether i use the mag drive or eheim i'm nervous that if i go one size smaller i might not have enough with headloss. i was looking for that 10-15x turnover and if i tee off the return for a fuge i will have more loss.
i'm only going from the sump to the dt above approx. 2.5-3' vertically with a tee for teh fuge and a y for the returns. i'm probably overthinking it. the eheim is brand new so i'd have no problem selling it or trading it.

i do have the koralia for dt circulation so i'm not trying to use my sump for all my circulation can you have too little flow through your sump? i just want to make sure the skimmer works properly.

yeah i've seen the jbj titanium with the seperate temp probe and digital read out for $100 just didn't know if i needed all that

oops wrong quote.

as long as you can return the water to the dt from sump, you can always adjust your flow with power heads in the tank

I had this exactly same pump in my 120 gal. reef with about 2.5 feet head loss, it was more than fine. I don't like go more than 5-6 turnover rate through the sump as water doesn't get filter out with too fast turnover. Especially for FOWLR you don't need all this flow.

thanks mmreef maybe i'll hold onto the 1262 for when i get to do the tank i want which is a 120 in my basement. would a fuge still be beneficial or should i just do a simple sump?

I like to have simple, clean sump. I don't believe fudge of this size you have available in sump will be beneficial. That's only my opinion, many people run successful fuges , they might have different view on this topic.
