40g long peninsula

I'm thinking of doing this sometime soon It uses 2 existing book shelves I own now in my office. It would be a DT of 60x11x16 tall. Make for a long short peninsula style tank. Totals 40g with an additional 12" behind the wood as a 7g sump.

Think it should make for. Nice room divider and have a good panoramic feel to it.

Any thoughts? Coral tanks up and running so I'm deciding on my next project.

Second idea is 20g DT with 5g sump in a drawer. Then book cases will still be together as a wall so I'd have this against the wall and the second bookcase would available shelf space on top.

Thanks. I was bored and the idea popped in my head last night. So I decided to learn google sketchup and design it. I'm really leaning towards the long one.

Only concern is weight. 1st book case will be against the wall and screwed to a stud for security. The second will be bolted to the first. I would screw it to the floor but tile on top of concrete doesn't expect screws too well.

Really cool idea. Make sure your bookshelf can carry this much weight as saltwater weight 8 ibs. per gal., plus rock and sand it might be close to 400-500 ibs. total.

I think it should be okay. It's a total of 6 1/2" uprights plus where the stands meet it make a 1" upright. Bolted to each other and the wall for rigidity. Always the chance tho.

What material is your bookcases made out of? As far as screwing down into tile and concrete, use a masonry bit and some tapcons or some different type of concrete screws and it will grab real good.

Ya I tapcon'd all my framing in when I finished the basement last year. But after spending that much $ on the floor, I'm hesitant to drill my tile.

I really want to do the first one As long as I can get the weight.

I am really debating tho, SW, black sand, and 2 island style aqua scapes in it.

Or white sand, cichlid stones running most of the length and half way up, and do Africans. I know its only about 40g but with a 5' length I could easily do enough small guys to have a bright and very active tank.

I could go bigger but weight is an issue.

I did think about getting the most out of it. So I may do a false wall on the top cube closest to the wall and do it reef ready with plumbing behind the wall. Then do a small sump under my desk. That would get me about 55g out of it and a full 6' tank.

But then ur talking 500+ pounds on 2 $35 book cases. Lol

I got the same bookcases , no way I would put more than 100 IBS. especially water on it. Looks really cool but I think it is disaster waiting to happen unless you can somehow strengthen those. They are made out of particle board not plywood right?

Correct. Ive been playing around with the false wall idea to hide bracing however it would only brace the back end.

I would end up with a full sheet of 1/2" birch lining the top, and a full sheet to cover the entire back of the cases.

Then use finish nailing to nail the birch to the back side of every board as well as the top sheet.

Then the rear and top birch would be screwed to the wall, along with the shelves being attached to the wall and together.

Really the only concern I have it essentially a twist or blowout from the sides, the 8 uprights should hold the weight no problem it's keeping it from together side to side I have to figure out. I think the rear bracing should keep everything from twisting or blowing out
