50 Gallons where are you?!

Is there anywhere to buy a reasonably priced 50gal tank? I'd like to do my first tank with one since I really like the dimensions and they are perfect for my space but I'm having no luck finding one anywhere. I'm kind of wary about buying a tank off of craigslist and bringing it home only to find it has a leak and I'm out $50+ bucks but is that really my only option? Any help would be great.

The 50 gallon one I assume your talking about is the 50 breeder one correct? The 36x18x20 is a nice layout. When I was liking to do my current build, I could not find one other than the dude on CL that wants way too much. I ended up in a 40b instead.

50 breeders are a bit of an odd size, if you are dead set on it, a place like aquarium adventure can order it for you, otherwise the 40 breeder or 55 gallon would be the common sizes you will usually find in stores

Talk to Will and have him make you one :) No idea on costs, but if you're just starting out, make sure you plan to spend a lot. And the. Multiply that by 10, and you may start to get close ;)

Yea it seems like a really odd size to find. I contacted Aquarium Adventure and it would be $165. does that seem reasonable? Or should I just roll the dice on a craigslist one and reseal it if there are issues with the seals? I that even possible?

Oh wow. That looks like exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks a ton. Do you think it would be worth the extra cost to get it made "reef ready" or could I do that myself/with help?

based on the glass cages price the aquarium adventure order price doesnt seem too steep, my guess is the acrylic for it would come in the 80-100 range though will would know for sure. if you can find a craigslist tank go for it, but in the grand scheme of things the tank is the cheapest thing you are going to buy setting up an aquarium... my nuvo8 was only $200 and i easily spent another 700 or so on the rest of the equipment so far.

i dislike glass cages because of the number of horror stories out there, but walt and some others have had good experiences with them, personally i wouldnt go with traditional 'reef ready' i prefer the glassholes overflow boxes and bulkheads drilled in the sides of the tank rather than the bottom. it pretty simple to drill a tank, especially if you use the templates glassholes provides.

Matt at Sho Tank can order and drill the tank for you if you're not comfortable with drilling the glass.

If you're going reef ready, you could go with a 65g. Same footprint as a 40 or 50 breeder, just a little taller.

Yea will quoted me $250. I will need to see the shipping times on glass cages because Aquarium Adventures said it would be a minimum 2-3 weeks to get it in.

another option if you are willing to goto a 48" tank is the deep blue 60gallon frag, its a really nice tank size, but is around $300 if i remember, aquapros has alot of 'unique' sizes in stock of both marineland and deep blue tanks in every flavor. Advanced aquatics had some really nice deals on in stock tanks last time i was there too. As i said in the grand scheme of things I wouldn't sweat much over the cost of the tank, its going to be one of the cheapest things you buy.

If I were you I would order the overflow and return kits from glass-holes.com drilling glass is pretty easy. I've done it and would be happy to give you a hand with it as I'm sure others would. Also you could take it to certain LFS and have it done by them for a small fee. Theres also a how to video on BRS for drilling glass. They also sell a press that holds the drill and keeps the bit flat and level.

Personally i prefer not to purchase full setups. Tank stand and possibly sump otherwise you end up with some stuff you dont want and then have to spend even more to get the equipment you do want.

if u have the room ive got a 75gal tank with stand and tops for 125 its not reef ready and i had someone come and look at this past weekend but no response just a thought. its in really nice shape
