"NOAA proposal threatens to earmark 83 species of coral as endangered.

What does that mean for us? The end of our hobby as we know it.

Imagine if we could no longer buy, sell, trade, or even remove and replace any number of very common aquarium species we have in our systems. Nearly all common stony corals including many of our favorite Acropora, Montipora, Porites, Pocillopora, Seriatopora, Pectinia, Pavona and Millepora species. In addition many of our favorite large polyp stony species such as Hammer coral, Frogspawn and Candy Cane corals will be illegal to even grow and share with your friends.

This would make no distinction between wild collected, maricultured, farmed, or aquacultured. The result is it could be a felony to give a branch of Hammer Coral to a friend, punishable by up to a $50,000 fine and 1 year in jail for doing so."

These are the proposed species; most of them aren't even in this hobby. Sorry Lokani owners, but it's time to take one for the seas.

LPS like frogspawn and hammer corals are, as well as staghorns and elkhorns, and many other popular corals. This will make it illegal to own and give away corals most people already have in their tanks.

We'd loose the hammers and frogspawns, but the only two acros that we'd loose are the A. speciosa and and A. lokani. The others are relatively unseen in the hobby, and the "Staghorns" that would be banned would only be those from the Atlantic, relatively unseen in the trade.

By the way I recommend mentioning that the aquarium industry has done more to promote responsible conservationism than many conservationists groups and that responsible management is always easier to enforce when livelihoods are maintained.

definitely gotta come up with code names and drop points payment methods money laundering the works gotta a fine tuned operation . can have frag houses instead of crack houses . women fragging in the nude so they cant steal the merchandise u know the works

I made a similar argument. Zoos and wildlife groups and conservatories have gone about the growth and rescue of countless species. Banning the mariculture and aquaculture of corals will reduce the likelihood of species continuation.
