I have read the advantage of bare bottom tanks are lower nutrients and higher flow....good for sps. My question is then if I am interested in keeping all types of corals sps and Lps does that make a bare bottom a poor choice. Or will Lps adapt to lower nutrient if fed properly?

It's all about personal preference...as long as you keep up with the maintenance (water changes), then it really doesn't make a difference in a mixed reef. I have a mixed reef, and find it more natural to have sand...the sand also indirectly feeds the corals because of the micro fauna it holds. Bare bottoms only benefit sps dominated tanks Imo.

I have BB with mostly SPS, but also some LPS like Duncan, Scoly,Hammer and Frogspawn. They are doing good in my low nutrient system, but I feed them regularly. I do have spot with lower flow in my tank and that is where I placed my LPS.
