Aptasia or Feather Duster

Well, I have been admiring a couple of feather dusters that were hitchhikers on my live rock. They are small, but I am able to make out a tube at the base. Out of nowhere this guy appeared. Is it a feather duster or aptasia? I am pretty sure I know the answer.

BTW, this is a 10 gallon nano. Established for about 4 weeks. Live rock, fish and water from LFS.

my guess is aptasia......I recently bought some peppermint shrimp and i know they are hit or miss but they cleaned house!

Looks pretty different than what I think are feather dusters, so I am thinking you are right. I wanted a shrimp anyways and was trying to decide. Aptasia X for $11 or a peppermint for $10? Kinda thinking what do I have to lose, other than an all out assault by the aptasia while I am waiting.

You said they ??? Are there more ??

And types they are aiptasia

Peps would help but easier way if you have some kalk just make a paste of it using warm water and smother over it

Welcome and where in chicago are you from by the way ??

There are two that look like this guy. There are 2-4 smaller guys at the back of the tank that I cannot get a got picture of. The 2-4 have a definate tube at the base and have more of a feathery look than a Medusa look.

I am in the South Burbs. This is one of my new insanities. The killer gold fish died, so I converted his tank.

For a 10g, would one peppermint be okay? like I said, I wanted a shrimp ashtrays, but want to keep the population under control.

That's definitely an aiptasia. you could probably do two peps if you feed a lot. I know they definitely can eat aiptasia as I have had them do it, but they may be less inclined if there is lots of other food. Good luck.

I control the food not my wife our kids, so to start, they will be loving themselves some aptasia.

From the little bit of experience I have, go with the peppermint shrimp. I have only one in my 75, but when I see an aiptasia it is gone within a day or two. Before that i shot them with vinegar, it worked also.

I couldn't agree more, I didn't expect them to work that well for the big aiptasia, just small and medium, BUT THEY ALL SEEM TO DISSAPEAR!

THEY ARE FANTASTIC!
