Basement sump

In the next few months i will be setting up my 180 thats been in storage for over a year ! Im going to have my sump and equipment in my basement , now this will consist of my display draining down approx. 6 feet where it will dump into a box with filter floss, this will then drain into a 75 gallon drilled tank as my first filter , this will have my protein skimmer and baffles , this will then drain into a split where some water will flow into a 135 gallon rubber maid container and some drain into a 55 gallon refugium , the fuge will also dump into the rubber maid and then back up to my display .

Now my question is : Does this need to be directly underneath where my display tank will be or can i have it about 5-6 feet in either direction ? Meaning will i have any problems with flow , return etc .....

Thanks for any advise

I would think you could put it anywhere you want, as long as you have enough drop to overcome the horizontal travel, and a powerful enough pump to push the water back.

Eventually i will have a very similar setup, but mine will be directly under the display.

My plumbing comes down and goes right for about 10 feet before entering my sump. Your system seems very complicated lol. Why so many tanks?

I'm wondering this too. It seems like it would be difficult to compensate for evaporation and all possible occurrences in multiple tanks. It just seems like more bad things can happen then in one large sump. Is there a reason why you need to do it this way?

BTW, when I had a basement sump, besides the vertical drop, I also had a horizontal distance of about 8-10 feet with no problem. I used an external return pump for the return. Boy, I miss a basement sump! :mmph:

Basement sump ftw lol. Every tank i ever have again is gonna have one. I use a mag 18 as a return pump

I agree that it sounds a little complicated but I would think as few bends in the return would be ideal. I'm in McHenry if you ever need help with tank stuff!

Hey ! Thanks to everyones replies and thoughts , i appreciate it , yes it does sound more complicated than it actually is .... Its more or less a sump and seperate refugium draining into the rubber maid ( wich will become a frag tank ) thats why the different tanks i have it drawn out but cant figure out how to post pics on here yet , as soon as i do and i start this project i will update

thanks again for the replies
