Bee Keppers?

Any apiarists on here? I was just out tending stored hive comb and thought I'd ask.

I grew up with bees but that was in a different age, before mites, beetles and so many pesticides in every yard. I kept them for a couple years recently but after loosing them I realized this is not a hobby I cannot learn from books alone. Any old time keepers from NWI or naperville area that want free muscle in exchange for sharing how you do things?

(Yes, I saw the title after I hit submit. $#%^)

U keep bees r u mad . Honey is available at plenty of stores and fairly inexpensive lol. I watched a whole show on bee keeping yea its not for me just like spiders arent for me. Good luck in u crazy hobby lol

I actaully don't keep them for the honey. I have 60lbs(5gallons) from the few years I did keep them. I do it as I enjoy watching and keeping the bees. Kinda like a reef, but with stingers instead of paly toxin.

Most people fail to realize how important bees really are. Many of our crops would not be the same without pollination and since CCD and other things the beekeepers have had a huge struggle to stay in the practice.

I've actually been looking into this as a really good friend of mine in CO is having great success and made me jealous of her crazy hobby (her pblog is called "paring down, looking up". I have almost 2 acres now and there are clover and wildflowers everwhere. I worrk about my neighbors using insecticides and herbicides though. Nothing worse than tasking weed-b-gone in your honey and Madjoe; Honeybees don't really sting unless you pin thm against your body with your flailing man-panic. Wasps and hornets are a whole different story :)

Yes and no. Honey bees are not native to North america, the lonely bumble bee is. If people were to stop killing them we would have pollinators enough to cover all but large fruit crops. They would still need traveling bee pollinating companies.

Insecticides are one of the leading thoughts as a cause for colony colapse disorder.

Guard bees will come and get you. Open a honey bee hive and the few bees tasked with guard duty will come and get you. Otherwise they are typically calm. Angry/agressive hives are usually requeened with calmer ones so selective breeding plays a big part.
