i was thinking of going with black sand once i come back from vacation ..

which would mean

Empty tank > take out rock work and keep it in a a seperate tank > pour fresh water > take out all sand and clean glass ( i bet it will be Fugly) > put in rock and water back > put black sand in ..

Phew .. does black sand even look that nice ?

this is going to be my new 75 gallon tank. my 3 previous SW tanks had white sand so wanted to try something different. had a FW with black and everybody that saw it wanted to buy my black sand. still cycling tank and put the big rocks in to cycle with. throwing some LR from my 65 later on. so aquascape is uncertain at this point. my BC14 is reflecting in the glass, sorry.

where did you get that sand from ? Old town aquarium ? sand that's completely black has high ferrous element so caution there :)

+1 on where did you get the all black sand from. I use the Hawaiian black sand in one of my eel tanks. The only thing I don't really like about it is that it seems to have a lot of white "specs" in it. I would have liked the more solid black.

got it probably more than 5 years ago. it is 3M product. not sure what grade(T or S). don't think they make it anymore. the rep told me it was inert and would be fine in aquariums when i bought it. it is not the blasting sand they sell at HD or Menards. I had used it in my 125 gallon tank for awhile with FW. Don't remember the company, think it started with an A, but it was either in Palatine or Wheeling and bought a few 50 pound bags back around 2009. bunch of us members in GCCA used it. had no issues with it in my FW. I guess I will see.

I think you're using 3M color quartz which is now manufactured by Estes as CeramaColor Quartz.

Checkout http://www.permacolorquartz.com/pdf/pooldoc.pdf for more info. I believe it's safe. Good luck!
