Taking down fish only tank and going reef, what do you guys prefer sand bottom or crushed coral? I have sand now and it's filthy under top layer. But I was very bad at cleaning. Still have crushed coral in garage. Thanks

I like having sand. I think it's more natural. I do have some good sand sifters to keep it looking clean.

I'd stick with sand...crushed coral will trap waaayyyy more crap and waste than the sand will. Which will cause you nitrate and phosphate issues.

I'm probably one of the only ones here, but I prefer crushed coral. I like it for exactly the reason Smitty said. It traps detritus. It is easy for me to vacuum it really clean every week. It is very hard to vacuum sand. If I'm not doing a water change, I just vacuum it into a filter sock in my sump.

I have sand right now and am switching to crushed coral. When I eventually got into sps the flow in my tank was moving some sand and when I added the diamond goby now there's always sand flying. So now moving to crushed coral

caribsea special grade reef sand is great because it's easy to vacuum.

This is what I went with for my new-ish setup. I like that it's too big to really blow around and as you mentioned, easy to vacuum. My previous tank was southdown and it was too easy to blow around and would get sucked up by the vacuum.
