BRS Rock leaching phosphate?

Has one had a problem with the Eco rock from BRS leaching phosphate?

I had a horrible case of hair algea and tried everything to get rid of and then I decided that I had to do something drastic. :yield:

Side note, I am in the process of moving so I had to break down my tank anyways and went ahead and gave the rock a vinegar bath.

I rinsed the rock well and now it looks like brand new rock (I cried a little bit inside when it came out so white). I have it soaking in RO/DI water with a pump. I tested the water today and found the phosphates to be 0.26 with the Hanna Checker.

Anyone else have this issue? How did you fix this problem? Just keep rinsing with clean Ro/DI?

Remember that dry rocks are either mined or allowed to dry, so they will have some kind of dried carbon source matterial on them. they are sources of phosphates, so it's best to cook them in a separate container to get rid of phosphates in rock.

Switch the RO/DI over to saltwater and stick the skimmer in the rubbermaid. That the best "cooking" technique?

I used some dry mined rock when i started my fo tank. I always thought something was odd becasue the rock became covered in cyano right after the cycle. I only had 1 fish at the time so i thought there wasn't a nutrient problem. I've been running gfo. The cyano went away on its own after a couple weeks. I've heard about mined rock leaching phosphates but never thought to test the water with my hanna checker so soon. i test it now once in a while and I don't get a reading. Hopefully it will go away for you!
