Building a Sump

Help please. Since I have been unable to find a sump that will hold enough volume and still fit my stand I'm going to try to build one from scratch. I'm hoping you can tell me where To buy the glass & get it cut and polished. Also how thick should the glass be for a tank 23L x 17W x 16H. I calculated it at twenty seven gallons. I figure at most it would only be three quarters full, right around twenty one gallons. Is that enough for a 55 gallon display?

Thanks,

Mike (1fishjones)

Wood sump, how's that work. I have heard of plywood tanks but I always just assumed they were just used as bracing so you could use regular window glass. Thanks I'll look into it. I'm chomping at the bit here. I have everything I need except a sump. I painted the back with Decoart American Lamp (Ebony) Black acrylic. It worked out great looks awesome. Drilling tomorrow. So once I have a sump I should have it up in no time.

His 55 is acrylic. And I agree with buying a regular tank and putting baffles in

Thanks for the replies, the problem is with my available space. It's 23 x 17, the tanks I found over ten gallons are 24" or more.

It might be cheaper to build another stand for your 55G and use a standard sized aquarium for your sump.

Thanks for your replies, The stand I'm using is an antique storage cabinet that played a big part in selling the whole reef tank idea to my wife si I have to stick with it. I checked out the eshopps sump. It's nice but only holds ten gallons. Tank got drilled today so if I don't come up with something by Friday I'll either use a ten gallon or start my build. Someone recommended Farm & Fleet. Said they had a good selection of heavy duty water containers. I'm going to check them out tomorrow.

Looks nice, but make sure it can hold the weight. 55 gal. full of water thats almost 450 ibs., throw some rock and sand and you're somewhere around 500-600 ibs.

Thanks it was a good find. Goodwill forty dollars. I think it may have been a headboard, there are slots that look like they're for a steel frame on both sides along the bottom and a lamp holder with a brass ring in the top middle back. If you look real close you can see the push button switch for the lamp on the top on the left side in the picture. The wiring is still there also. I may use the switch for the LED fixture. She's very well built, solid red oak I think. Probably from the forties or fifties. I picked up some red oak veneer, plywood, glue, and one by twos for a matching canopy. Got the veneer from Woodcrafters in Downers, the grain match is nice., if I can match the stain it should look sharp.
