Past 3 months have been disastrous going from a great looking mixed reef to loosing all my expensive sps by a huge crash and now that Im getting my tank under controll again yesterday while doing a water change the siphon hose fell out of my tank and got my eb-8 on my apex wet and blew past the breaker on the eb-8 to the gfi I don't know what all is blowen yet because Im waiting a week for everything to dry before pluging everything in. It seems like alot of people go through this in this hobby but sometimes I don't know why after loosing more then $1500 dollars in corals and equiptment. Can someone remind me why we do this because right now im questioning myself.

Because we have a problem. There should be a reefer anonymous. And not the good reefer that only cost 50 a week...lol....sorry to hear about your issues.

Yeah it sucks rako. I almost quit once lol. When the frustration surpasses the enjoyment it no longer seems worth it. Im glad I stayed in, my tank has never looked better.

Good reefer at $50/week!? Hook a brotha up! Lol. Hang in there Rako. I've wanted to give it up plenty of times, but glad I didn't.

You can quit, but you'll be back. I quit after a big crash, but two years later I was poking around an it was all new again. Corals and fish that weren't common before were now common. This time I vowed to keep it simple. What kept me from starting back up wasn't the money, it was that I was spending so much time measuring and maintaining that a lot of the joy was gone. Now my maintenance is water top-offs and fish food. Occasionally I'll dose.

What keeps me going is the peace and serenity you can get from looking at your tanks. Seeing the fish and corals interact and grow is such an amazing experience. I just had ich wipe out almost out of my fish and I wanted to quit, but then I remembered that it wouldn't be fair to the ones that survived, as well as I'd miss my tank.

Cause we r addicts. And most of us r men and being men we cant be defeated by something like a dam tank lol. I never had full crash thank god few mini ones but had lots of crap happen floods sparks being electricuted by busted heater more floods lol. Idk about u but males me want to defeat this hobby more every time something happens i have a need to figure out how to make sure it dont ever again. But thats just me i have add and cant throw in towel on anything believe me i wanted to many of times

its only money ! what else would you spend it on ? fast cars , big boats private jets ? and island home where you can just disappear...what fun is that .
that guy .

Its challenging, requires commitment, patience, and its cool, so I think it sets us apart from a lot of other hobbies which people can pick up and put down more easily. Only about 700,000 U.S. homes have a saltwater tank, so that puts in in the <1% category. I wonder why I started a reef tank too sometimes, but then I look at a before and after pic of some coral or a fish I have and say hey, "It grew, I'm making progress!". Also, these forums provide a lot of informational support, without them I would have thought I was the only person having problems in the hobby, but we all do, so don't worry, you're not alone.

post of the week !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just ripped out the last of my half-dead sps and ran them over to a nice reefer's house to see if they'll survive while I rebuild the tank...feeling your pain, man.

We all have our reasons why were still in this hobby, and I agree with all of them. I do love waking up in the morning and sitting in front of my tank with a cup of coffee and watching all my fish and corals it brings me peace. and if that is all the peace I get for the whole day its enough to keep going. Thanks everyone.

I haven't had a reef setup for very long and before that I only had a couple of freshwater rigs when I was growing up, but I have to say that my wife and I commiserate when one of our reef inhabitants reaches the end of its life and we get stressed when someone isn't feeling well or goes MIA because there is a lot of responsibility in having a reef tank. At the same time, where else can you find such an amazing density of varied life for your enjoyment. With great responsibility come great rewards (and sometimes great setbacks). For me, I look at the tank as a symbol of my life - sometimes things don't go as I would expect or plan, sometimes I get surprised by something new, but most of the time I try to do the day-to-day things to keep on keeping on and enjoy the journey. We are the keeper of a little slice of the ocean, the stewards of mini-ecosystems, and those titles bear merit to the inevitability of the learning process to become better at what we have signed up for.

Keep your chin up. :)

Whoa thought u had that under control

It seemed like things stabilized but it was a false alarm. There is surprisingly very little out there about potassium overdose but apparently the damage can take 6 months to run its course. I'm also thinking there could be sandbed issues.

I've heard about potassium being an issue before. Kinda make Mr want to test for it. I think it was maidia that told me that Acro power can cause potassium issues if dosed to much

The test kits seem to be mostly unreliable. Unless you're dosing it I wouldn't worry to much about it. I tested it and it was low so I added the required amount. turns out the test was way off and I ended up dosing too much.
