Carpet Anemone into Reef Tank

So I have a established Reef tank and i want to introduce a Carpet Anemone into it. Does anyone know how hard it will be to do that? Or also what problems I might encounter?? I've never had an Anemone but want to get into one. Also want to know how to get my clowns to be able to host?

Thank You for the help in advance.

A lot of fish will fall pray to a carpet nem. If you are looking for some thing to host with your clown get a bubble tip.

Clarkiis, actually, love carpet anemones. Slow moving fish though tend to wander too close to a flowing carpet nem and get eaten. It's uncommon, but it happens. Same thing with faster darting fish. Just be aware.

Are you talking about the new bow front that you just upgraded too? If so I would definitely give your take some time to restablize after moving everything over.

Dan yes thats the tank, and yes im gonna wait n what I meant by established was corals around. I heard anemones sting corals and kill them, so thats why I wanted to know how hard it would be because I have never had one. But I think the carpet anemone is so cool and I would like to have one. Yea I was liking the bubble tip also, but that carpet still calls my attention.

I dont have clarkiis I just have the original false perc clown fish.

Im not putting nothing new in there yet Dan I want to be sure about it all first. Imagine I was freaking out about leathers. .....which are fully open now by the way.

Carpets have more of a reputation as a killer than btas, and as far as my (limited) understanding goes, there's no way to force a clownfish to host in anything, they just kind of do as they want... strangely similar to their bffs the anemones! (Nem's gotta 'nem). Good luck with your new addition when you do get around to adding it!

Check my scarlet anemone thread. Beast is his name. My clowns won't host it. And carpets do eat fish I lost several.a goby I got lasted five minutes and I watched as he fell pray to the paralyzing sting then ten minutes later was swallowed up and gone. As for corals it depends on the size. If the anemone is big enough he might be able to for sure. Polys are no match I noticed. Though my xenia fought back and is holding him at bay. My carpet even swallowed a piece of xenia it tore of the glass just to spit it back out a day later. The coral did die lol.

Ok so now that this was posted I am all good and will not consider getting a Carpet Nem just because I don't want to lose fish. So on that note no Nem for me......As much as I do love them. I heard that some clowns will host a Hairy Mushroom, so maybe if I can find a rock full of some then maybe they will....I know I seen one of my Clowns the other day like attempting to host my Green Toadstool as the Yellow Goby was on it also. So that was something to see. We shall see what and if they will host.

Thanks for the comments and advice everyone!!!

Haha, figured id get a txt from ya if you already picked up the carpet nem vs just "planning" - yes carpets have a tendency to eat fish - BTAs are great, reds/greens are pretty easy to find and not that expensive. Typically once they find where they like they dont move but... nems' gotta nem.

As far as clowns hosting...like others said, they do what they want - clowns' gotta clown - they'll host almost anything sometimes. Mine were hosting my pH probe in the corner of my tank, i took it out and now they literally host the silcon seam. Ive seen them host nems, hairy shrooms, toadstools, cloves, and even xenia.

I have seen clowns hosting in a lot of weird things. Sadly, mine are exactly the opposite and will not get near anything. Try a BTA if you are looking for an anemone. Usually once it finds the right spot it will sit put. So far (knocks on wood) I have not lost any fish to the BTA.

I know Dan its hard for me to hold back when I want something, but no I was not going to be young n dumb I wanted to be mature about this....LOL......I knew they ate fish but I wanted to get advice about it first....I appreciate all the help you have been giving me though I really do. Fish and corals are doing great and Leathers have all opened up and looking great also.

Thank You again!!!

My whole thing with getting a Nem is that I have corals in there and will it not sting the corals and kill them?? Thats my major concern or is that something I should be worried about?

Yes also my corals are hosting the sand in the bottom left of my tank!!!...LOL

ALSO THIS IS MY 100th post HIP HIP HORRAY!!!!!

Congratz on your100th post! lol

Yes, the thing with the BTA is that it will sting the poop out of anything that is near it. If you can find a spot for it, and it doesn't decide to roam, that would be great. It will sting the corals, thats the risk of having anemones around. You want enough room for the BTA so it can grow and possibly split in the future.

I guess I will need to get rid of some stuff so I can put the BTA in my tank....I don't mind getting rid of some of these Gorgonia I really don't like them at all. Will have to post a FS for them tomorrow. Hopefully will get some bites which will help pay for the BTA.

Just keep in mind that the BTA will eventually settle in where it wants to, so some rearrangement of coral may be necessary! I was lucky enough to put mine in before the majority of my coral, and since than it has more than doubled in size (in less than 5 months), and taken over the entire 1/6th of the 90g, 4ft tank that it is in. I say take over, as it has the option of inflating all over the rock work in a number of ways, making it fairly impractical for me to keep coral in that section. That said - it's absolutely gorgeous, and I love mine!!! Find a nice one, and you will be assured of plenty of joy just watching them do their nem thing. (Oh, and you may want to cover powerheads / overflows with filter floss depending on the slot sizes until it settles in somewhere). Have fun!

I put a carpet in my 300 gallon tank in within five days it consumed a chocolate brown tang, orange shoulder tang, clown, and 3 fire fish. I was going to take it out of the tank but one night it moved from the right side of my tank to the left where my 3 18 inch engineer gobies lived and the next morning I could not find it and never did. I am certain that they buried him just like they do every brain or coral I put in their territory.

First question, Gigantea or haddoni? Haddonis are notorious fish eaters, easier to care for than Gigs.. Gigs aren't really fish eaters, harder to get and keep. People need to clarify "Carpet", there are several.
