Clams in a fuge?

it's an interesting idea buy I wonder how many you would need to make a difference in your tank; especially if you have a larger one. would the cost make it prohibitive?

I used to use those clams a few years ago... only a few will do a good job filtering the water, but in my experience they don't live very long. I purchased all mine from the seafood section( the ones sitting on ice) in the stores around my house.

What they were still alive lol?

Yep... most people think that they're dead and sitting on the ice to stay fresh for people to cook, but they add actually in a type of hibernation. I'd buy about a dozen, place them in a large bowl with some tank water, and wait for them to become active again. It takes about 20-30 mins for them to come back to life. Once you see their siphon tubes sticking out their shells, you can place them in your tank/ refugium.

lol wow good to know, i wouldve never guessed!

How long did they live for?

To be honest,I didn't really keep track, I noticed after about 5-6 months that my cuc was cleaning the shells. But, at that time, my tank was still new( under a year) and I probably didn't have enough nutrients in there. Since the topic has come back up, I might do a couple more and see how they do, considering my reef is very established and self sustaining, they may survive much longer.
