I have a clarity plus tank, dimensions 48x20x20 with built in wet dry in back
Not sure if anyone has any experience with these setups but other site said for protein skimmer get a HOB aqua c remora pro
Also I heard instead of bio balls use live rock rubble??????
It's a FOWLR and just
1- Zoa frag
1- Kenya tree frag
Please help thanks

I have a 58 and a 30 gallon tank and each one has an aqua c remora pro. The one on the 30 used to be a hob but when I added a sump I moved it in there. Each week I empty about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of green water from the cup. I am in the process of setting up a 250 tank and have a 55 for a quaratine tank to which I put a cpr bak pak 2. That skimmer is pulling out crap that I have never seen from the aqua c and now I finally understand when people talk about stinky skimmate, OH MY GOD

You generally would still want a skimmer. Bio-balls can turn into a nitrate factory over time. Live rock and bio balls are used to break down naturally the waste and breakdown of uneaten food naturally, but there are usually more waste than the live rock can naturally work on its own. It's not an ocean afterall, its a very limited fish tank. Sorry if I sound like I'm lecturing....

A skimmer on the other hand removes said waste before it even has a chance to break down. The bubbles attract the proteins to its surface and then pull it upwards. Hence "protein" skimmer.

I would HIGHLY recommend a skimmer if you are going to start keeping corals. If you had just a FOWLR tank, it's still debatable if you should run one or not, but if the lives of coral are on the line, I think its imperative.

If you need one, I have a Red Sea Prizm rated for up to a 60 gallon tank. I was running it on my 55 gallon and it was pulling out the nastiest gunk. If you want, PM me and we can talk about it. Not trying to peddle my stuff, lol, but if you're interested let me know.

You might wanna try to run the water level lower so you can pull out dryer skimmate. It'll remove less water and give you that grime you're getting from the quarantine ;)
