Colonial hydroids?

I always assumed these were feather dusters. I have a few tight clusters around the tank.. When they are retracted, it almost looks like transparent, hollow blades of grass. Very spongy. I have been reading much about hitchhikers and pests and these seem similar to hydroids when I get a closer look. I have one cluster of at least 50-75 in a 4 square in area.

Thanks for any advice in advance!

I kept thinking they were aptasia but I'm thinking hydroids now, too. Copperband butterfly finally took care of thousands covering everything in my tank.

I have a lot of other stuff growing on that rock.. Could I chisel the bad sections off, then keep an eye out for others around the tank? I bought an "established" system and I am pretty sure I got every type of hitchhiker imaginable... I wish I would have stuck with dry base rock from the start.. Live and learn.. Planning on a Copperband too. Just waiting for a prime specimen..

Thanks everyone!

yea, but they have a root system similair to bamboo. so you wana be sure you get every lil bit of it out. i never heard of the copperband. ive always wanted one but now i reallly NEEED one

Thanks! I've seen mixed reviews about them.. The more successful cases seem to have been in tanks where they could starve the Copperband into predation.. Seeing as it would be my first fish, I could manage that. My tank has all kinds of pests. Although, I did manage to get my hands on a peppermint shrimp that cleaned all of the aiptasia out of my tank and an emerald crab that rid the tank of bubble algae. +1 for natural remedies lol

Double post....

I never actually saw him eat any but after being plagued with these pests for many months, I added the Copperband & one day there was not a single one left!

After kicking it all around, I think I'm going to ditch all 140lbs of rock and start fresh with dry base rock. God knows what else is on this rock, and I don't have the experience to ID it all. I would rather avoid the longterm headache... I guess this gives me a reason to start a FOWLR with all this pesty rock! I hope my corals handle the transition well.
