cooling reef tanks

My temp has been 81-83 since summer started and I would like to get it back to 78-79. I am using LEDs and with no AC on in the house, it gets hot sometimes. I just put up a small fan over my tank under the leds blowing air into the water and am going to see if that helps a little. How do you guys keep your tank at or near normal temp during the hot summer days?

My tank fluctuates from 80 to 84. At 84 my halides turn off. At 82 my fan turns on blowing at the top of water

Usually running a fan over the surface of tank water or sump will bring the temp. down about 1-2 degrees. In the emergency on very hot days make some ice pack out of ziplock bags filled with water and freeze them. Drop one or more depending on need in to your sump. This should help you lover the temp. a few degrees. Once you're done just put them back in the freezer for the next time you need to use them again.Best is to get a chiller if possible, of course.

I actually use tap water for my tanks so doing it with tap water wouldn't be a problem. Temp. isn't terribly high right now but I would like to see how the corals do at a temp of around 78 compared to the low 80s.

i got a chiller and a temp controller a few months ago and it has been my favorite thing i have bought since an ro unit in my eyes

Ac been on for the whole summer two units non stop and both tanks have chillers. Reef stays 77/78 fowlr stays 79

I keep several frozen gatorade bottles filled with water in the freezer, and sometimes drop one into my sump.

You use tap water with no problems with algae or anything ?

He's part of the tap water club. He's tanks look great with no problems! You'd be surprised. It's only a lucky few that get to do this. I tried and it didn't work out for me and I literally live down the road from him. :p

I used to use a fan also. It did help bringing the temp down a few degrees but evaporation is much quicker. I've heard of people that freeze sw and just drop the cubes straight in. BTW, I used to use tap water also with no problems.

No problems with anything. Been using tap water for years and just recently started doing water changes on my reef with RO to see if it makes a difference. I still top off with fresh though and change my fowlr with tap.

What???? lol I thought it did work for you? weird how water changes from one neighborhood to another one nearby.

The frozen bottles of water work great, just make sure that they are in a high flow area or right near the return pump going back to the tank. This has worked before for me in the past with great results. I would have at least 3 of these bottles ready during the summer months.
