Drilling tempered glass

I tried drilling a 55 once and didnt realize that it was tempered glass. I was chunks of glass in my garage for 2 years. It scared the crap out of me when it exploded.

tempered glass is made stronger by a heating a quenching process, this process while adding shear strength to the glass increases its brittleness. It the common trade off in material science, the stronger the material the more brittle, the more flexible the weaker. Ceramics are the strongest materials but crack and shatter easily, ie ceramic knives vs steel.
