Dry rock online ?

i dont know about lr on line but the rock at aquapros is fully encrusted purple at a good price. it is in glenn ellyn

Dont order from BRS, it leaches phosphates into your tank and takes forever to cycle out. Huge pain in the ***, I would never put BRS rock in my tank if I was given it for free. I ordered some before I knew how bad it was and read up on it before it went in my tank. instead of wasting all 12lbs i decided to break a piece up and use it to glue some frags. bad idea, the stuff was covered in hair algae within a week even though Ive never seen any in my tank before. I still have the remaining 11lbs sitting in my garage.

Now I think this occurs because it is "live" dry rock, so basically it was alive at some point and now it isn't and there is still a bunch of organic matter encrusted on it that leaches phosphate when it enters your tank. Instead I bought a few pieces of rock from my LFS that was dry and they said it was bleached, now I dont know if this is true but it had no dead organics, was bone white, and gave me no problems. I added the pieces to my tank and within a month or so it was completely seeded. If you go this route I would suggest buying "bleached" rock then going to your LFS store and buying a rock or two of nice live rock. You can use this to seed the dead rock and get your stuff rollin.

So have I. The only issue I have with Marco is how heavy it is. The rock is not nearly as porous as premium live rock.

I love Marco rock for the shapes and how the rocks interlock with each other. But I hate how much water it displaces in a system and it's hard to shape, even with a chisel and hammer. It's too easy to ruin the shape.

Pukani is light and a handsaw cuts through it like butter. It can leach phosphates but this can be avoided by treating it properly with an acid bath and a good wash. And most people have no issues with it leaching phosphates. I initially thought my rock had this problem, and it might have for a while. Eventually it passed and my phosphates are now closer to idea.

For the one problem that Pukani has, there are too many benefits to overlook and pass it up. It's amazing how much more water I was able to put in my tank after changing my marco rock out for pukani. In a small system like mine, my biggest reason for switching was to increase the total water volume and I am happy with the results.

Never thought about the benefits of pukani in this way... Thanks

I've never had a single issue shaping Marcorock before.... I usually just put a grinding stone on my dremel and can get crazy with it..... Maybe I'm the odd man out on this one though ???

but reefrocks.net sells it for $1.70/lb tax free and shipped, and you usually get a few pounds extra, and free cuts for base rock...

Thats if you're buying it at 50lbs a box yes but if you're just buying it by the pound they sell it for $2.00 a lbs

Got my rock from jeff today about 70 pounds, got 80 pounds of sand, jeff was a great guy will do business with him again.
