feeding while away

lets assume smaller tanks with a few small fish and a handful of corals. Trying to be general but i know it will vary somewhat.

I set up my ATO so it has a larger reservoir. I adjust my skimmer so it is not as wet (mostly so it doesn't overflow) Regarding feedings, according to The Reef Aquarium (Volume 1) by Sprung & Delbeek they say leaving for a week without feeding is fine.

It is nice to have a friend or someone to stop by and check up on everything. Sometimes that's not always possible.

I think it boils down to what you have in your tank. Also, do you have stuff like ATO that is set up. Evaporation will cause some havoc with any tank at this time of the year. Water levels could drop and that could reduce or eliminate the usefulness of your skimmer....as an example.

I agree with Gus...a couple of days is most likely ok...anything longer might require the need to have some top off...and a light feeding. Also, one other thought...do you have your lights on a timer? A day or two with the lights off may be ok....depending on what is in your tank from a coral perspective...more than that...you could have some real problems.

If you have fish a cheap fish feeder is good to have but if it's coral really nothing. Everything i have is on controllers and my tanks are self maintenance pretty much, I set up fish feeders if im going to be gone the weekend.

ya i have a timer i would put the lights on if i went out of town. No ato, sump or anything fancy. Just a 14g cube with 2 small clowns and a variety of corals. i just recently got a 55g from a co-worker of my gf who wanted out of the hobby. I've been very busy cleaning and fixing everything up on it. Came with a very resilient old clownfish in it. Not sure how it survived as long as it did (he said 7-8 years old at least). just looking ahead to xmas to see if i need anything to cover me for a few days. making some covers for the new (to me) tank today. No skimmer in the big tank...came with a few bags of fish gear that i'm sorting through and trying to figure out what functions and what can be fixed. A visi-jet skimmer was in there...turns on and bubbles but i wouldn't say it skims just yet (but based on reviews that might be the best it gets).

I'll look into an auto-feeder soon. i was told i couldn't spend a much on the large tank, but i'd like to make it presentable.

Does anyone know of a feeder that is controllable? I am thinking about hatching some of my own food, potentially i could pump some into my sump area where it would get sent into my display. .... thoughts?

imagine sending fresh cyclops into a display! the fish would go to town while wether you were in town or not!
