Frag tank setup. Best method?

Hi all, I finished setting up my first frag tank. It is plumbed into my display... It is a 40 Breeder...

Couple questions.. I am only lighting it with 1 Kessil so far... That is all I want for the time being... I'm not using the full 36" spread yet.

I built a few egg crate PVC racks for frags... Now, I have extra live rock. Is there anything wrong with doing live rock on the bottom of the tank, then frag racks above the rock? Then the light of course... No sand.

Then decent flow throughout of course... Other than that, that is all I plan on doing. Seem like any problems could occur?

Yes I know it is plumbed to my tank and I can infect other corals if one has something. I know that.

Thanks!

I am setting my frag tank up the same way. Just have lots of flow going underneath the racks to keep detritus from settleing

I think your doing it right more live rock the better in there to support beneficial bacteria growth. And from what Ive seen algae will usually cling to the rocks rather than the PVC.

Just a thought but if you are tied into your display tank you might not need any extra rock in the frag tank. Unless you are adding several fish to the frag tank you won't be increasing the bio load by much using half a 40b for coral.

Ideally I would leave it with only racks and if necessary add a little rock to your sump or DT. This would allow you to, for example, turn off your frag tank pumps to separate it from the DT, feed the frag tank heavily, and after feeding throw a filter sock on the frag tank return to catch any left overs before they blow back to the DT.

I like that idea. Maybe I'll do a piece or two of lr and call it a day... Swap out the frag tank rock and put it in the sump. I'll leave a couple pieces though like I said. I plan on putting a six line into the frag tank. Of course that won't be until I buy one and qt him in.
