Fuge or no fuge

I have a 25 cube heavily stocked SPS system with an in line 15 gallon frag tank. I'm considering switching out my current sump (20L) for a 40 breeder. I have always run a fuge but I just installed an ATS recently. do you think a fuge is necessary if you have an ATS. Now this is strictly for nutrient export. Not considering pod production or what not. I don't have any pod dependent fish such as dragonets.

I would like to run no fuge to give myself more equipment room but am leary of going away from what I've always done.

Well that's what I'm kinda hoping someone can chime in on. I just setuo the ats and have never run one previously. My fuge is currently basically just a xenia growout tank with LR and sand. But can an ATS work as well or better than a fuge in regards to nutrient exportation?

I think it all depends on how big your ATS is and how much it is producing. I have always run fuges and swear by them. I think all the microfauna it sustains is important to a healthy reef ecosystem. Maybe you can figure out a way to run the ATS over the fuge section with some macroalgae, kind of how Reefwise does it?

Ya the reason I'm asking is because I want to swap out my 20L which has a fuge and ATS for a 40b to give myself more equipment room and to just tidy things up overall, but I have always run fuge with good results. I think I'll just pick up a 40b now ($1 per gallon sale) and sit on the idea for a while.

If you can give yourself more water volume go for the bigger sump and then if you are have nutrient problems you can always add a fuge.
