I have a 75 gallon reef ready with a 30 gallon sump. A few fish and mostly LPS . My sump currently has 5 inches of sand but the Calerpa has gone south since my light went out without me knowing it. I want to re-do the sump and I am wondering what the best set up seems to be. I am content with LPS and I have lots of great coralline in the display tank. I was even thinking of bare bottom for the display. Any opinions would be great.
 
30L or 30 regular? I'll look if you have some pics up, but if you wouldn't mind posting some so we can weigh our suggestions in, that would be great! There's a movement towards BB, so you'll definitely hear some yay's for that.
 
DSB in a fuge, don't waste your tank space with it. I've seen setups with a 10 gallon or 20l that's nothing but a fluidized sand bed for that purpose but BB or something else in the DT. Way better solution IMO

If I picked up that 110 that was like 4' deep, I would totally do a DSB, but otherwise, I would go with miracle mud in the fuge and see how that fairs.
 
If your LPS and other tank inhabitants are healthy, I would argue you found the method that works best for you & your tank! Many people in this hobby struggle to find that balance and I would try very hard to keep it (or replicate what you lost)

As for benefits on bare bottom vs sand there have been many successful tanks using both established methods. I prefer having a clean sump, but, maintenance is more time consuming. Removing the sand will also remove all of your established bacteria colonies and I would be hesitant to make such a change unless your has other means to filter the water such as a decent skimmer, sand, established live rock.
 
My sump is BB but has the fuge plumbed in separately. It's filled with DSB, rubble, filled with macroalgae packed with millions of pods.
