Glass Tops for Tanks

What's everyone's stance on glass tops? Right now i have my tops on mostly because i dont want more fish to jump out as i've lost a couple already from carpet diving.

Is there any harm to keep them on? I've noticed most people don't run tops on their tanks.

All my parameters of my tank are where they should be and i do weekly WC's but it seems that my coral is growing slow, now i know coral does grow slow but it seems awfully slow to me. Is there a chance the glass tops could be part of the issue?

Guess i should of used the search option before i posted :) I found a nice DIY guide i can use which i think i might do, Is there any chance that the glass tops could be slowing down the growth of corals though?

im not expert and I'm sure someone with more experience will join in. But from my knowledge, glass lids prevent evaporation. Evaporation is a good thing to have. Glass will also reduce the power of the light that is going through it.

I think that's about right. Ditch the glass, go with screen.

I just sent goat here a pm to see if he has any more plastic mesh for sale so that part is already on its way to being worked on.

I run 2/3 of my tank with a glass top to decrease the frequency of my top-offs. I run LEDs so i don't need all that evap to cool my tank. If it is hot outside, i take off a section to cool my tank. Never had a problem in 10 years with at least some glass over my tank.

Main issue with glass tops is it prevents proper oxygen exchange. Not sure how your tank is set up, if you have a sump you should be ok. But if you don't, then you could be depriving your tank of fresh oxygen, which is bad.

I'm running LEDs as well and the tank is in the basement so from the cooling factor im not too worried about that. I think its more a light issue im running into.

I do have a sump in the bottom so i think my oxygen levels should be fine, but just worried about light/coral

agree with what's been said, ditch the glass tops. reduces light penetration and you literally need to clean them every few days to keep them clear. check Bulkreefsupply, they have a video on how to make the screen tops, which is what I have done. You can also buy the materials from them, but they are pricey compared to getting the stuff from homedepot and finding someone on here that can sell you the screen cheap
