Algae grows where it is fed or where sunlight can catch in the tank. Can you share what your nitrate & phosphate levels are and how your clean-up crew population looks like?
Edit: I just noticed that you had a new tank post from the 8th of May. Is the tank a brand new setup?
My nitrates are 0 and not sure on the phosphates since I found out today my test kit is bad, but I had my water tested today and they said everything was perfect sorry I dont remember the params. The tank with the hair algae is not brand new. I just set up one of my other tanks.
the reason your test kit is reading 0 Nitrates is actually deceiving....the HA is comsuming the nitrates and therefore giving you a flase positive reading of 0...likely will be the same for Phosphates as well...
how is your tank with regards to detritus? do you have heavy accumulations in your tank or sump? do you feed heavy with foods containing any phosphates? do you run your skimmer wet or dry?
Turbo snails can help with HA bit they will typically go for the short stands of HA first as well as any micro algae on the rocks and glass. They have a difficult time with long strands because they like to graze the surfaces of rocks without obstacles. Larger Mexican Turbo snails can do the most damage to HA growth but they also can do damage to rockwork and frags as they bulldozer their way around the tank...
I would try to manually remove as much as possible by hand and do large water changes as often as you can.
Persoanlly I started running BPs early this year and with the help of manual removal I am 97.5% HA free...
Haha chet im way too new to saltwater for half of what you just said. Idk how to measure or test detritus. Theres alot of rocks.... like packed, but I just cleared out some for better circulation. I dont feed heavy at all. Not sure if my skimmer runs wet or dry lol how would I tell. I remove the algae everyday but its got like bubbles on it and it just gets right back on an hour later
Yes it will help but depending on the level of PO4 it could deplete the media quickly. I would do some 50% water changes and get it under control first and then look to maintain the low level with the reactor if needed.
Removing any PO4 will help control it.
