Have to stick finger in the hole

I have the reef octopus nwb 150 skimmer. Each time it shuts off it won't start pumping again until I stick my finger in the hole. It used to get going by just putting my finger in and would start right up. Now I have to prod around in it and wiggle my finger around to get it going and it takes several minutes before I get a good pump going

Is it going bad or is this normal for this pump?

i have to do that on my bh-1000 hob if I take it completely off line for cleaning. I think it's essentially "priming" the pump. You don't want to just go full down a little hole like that without a little foreplay anyhow :a01:

you might have a little buildup in your venturi too. maybe a vinegar bath. not sure how long you've had it, but it should be pretty consistent in how long it takes to prime it.

Just recently it's been harder to get it going....sounds like the old lady. I'll try and run it in vinegar for awhile to see if that makes a difference

When cleaning the pump itself I pulled out the shaft and the impeller and rinsed out detritus inside. Then I put it back together in a Vinegar/water solution. Anything else I need to do to the pump itself? How about the body of the skimmer. I've never been able to get it completely clean. It doesn't disassemble so I cannot reach towards the bottom. Any way to clean this?

U could soak in vinagar but i just clean the pump and callit a day

Solved my problem. Still had to prime by sticking my finger in the hole but it was like it used to be only a fraction of a second. Must just have been dirty
