Hi I just started a 20Gallon soon to be reef. Thought it would be a great idea to get on a forum. I'm going to attempt to post a video...(hope it works). My tank finished cycling about 3 weeks ago and I have some algae growing, I was hoping to get an ID. I'm not too worried about it since my tank is very young but would like to know what kind of algae it is. I'm talking about the long stringy stuff.

Thanks!

Jim

Welcome to ChicagoReefs Jim! Looks like diatom to me. Very common in new tanks and should eventually go away as your tank matures and with proper tank maintanence

Thanks, I'm using rodi w/ 0tds so Hopefully it should go away soon.

I've only changed about 4 gallons since the cycle has been over. I've gotten mixed reviews on how much to change after the cycle. would it be alright if I changed out another 5?

Hello and welcome. You can change out as much as you like. The beneficial bacteria is in the sand and on the rocks.

Just did a 5G water change and syphoned out those diatoms. I never got around to adding sand during the cycle so I decided to add 5lbs during the water change. I plan on adding 5 more next water change until I have around 20lbs. I rinsed the sand in rodi a bunch of times before adding.

I'm sure I'll get even more diatoms after adding that sand but I had to do it.
