I completely understand the carpet problem, but as noted it’s solvable.
I recommend putting the tank in a location that it will be enjoyed the most. Someplace where you normally sit and relax and will be able to lean back and watch and enjoy the tank.
When tanks are put where you only pass by or put it in the basement and the only reason you go to the basement is to feed the fish, it will get ignored and neglected with time.
Mine is in my living/family room, and every day as I’m winding down after work I sit back in the laZboy sip my cocktail and watch reef; so nice! I have other FW tanks, in other rooms, and they get very little attention or enjoyment.
All this being said, you can’t put a tank just anywhere, one big concern is the weight of the tank (water is very heavy). You need to pay special attention to the ability of a floor to support the load. The other considerations are all the normal maintenance for water changes and where to house your mechanicals if you can’t fit everything in a sump below the tank.
Have fun and negotiate with the boss to find a nice place where it can be enjoyed the most.
