So I set up a 20 tall hospital tank and was wondering if it will cycle without anything in it? Also I'll probably bee in the market for some designer clowns and two retro fit 150 watt pendants for a 36" long 20" deep tank unless any one Thinka that's not enough light for a mixed reef, I'm open to suggestions

i always use water from main tank to fill my qt so water is cycled and use a sponge in my filter from tank to gets the qt going fast

If you are desperate, you can put the fish in a un cycled at tank. What you have to do is keep an eye on the ammonia level and do a water change as soon as you see it rise. The bad thing about this method is that you do a lot of pwcs and use a lot of salt. The tank will eventually cycle but is a slow process.

I'm north of Chicago but thanks for the offer, and I'min no hurry. If I know one thing about saltwater tanks its not to rush things

I'll try my friend who lives pretty close, hopefully his water is doing good now that he got rid of all that algae

Water is not "cycled". None of the bacteria you need in the water, it is on surfaces like live rock or filter media material.

if you want to make sure it helps cycle go get seachems "stability" it worked good for me when i set my hospital tank up.. I used my tank water when my fish got ich and i been using stability a capful a day and i do water changes every 2 days or 3 days but it has been working great.
