I'm thinking about purchasing an rodi unit for my 30 gallon saltwater tank.

How many GPD rodi unit do I need ?

Also, is there a brand you would recommend?

Brands? good experience/bad experience

75 gpd is more than enough without being too much. Awesome price, awesome customer service and super cheap replacement filters.

I've only had experience with my 6-stage Filter Guys unit, but it's worked like a champ. Most people like the BRS offerings.

Regardless of how big a tank, I'd still imagine a 75-100gpd is what you should look into. Are you hooking up to a basement sink, or kitchen, etc.? Just thinking of how you'd plumb it...I run a very long line (IMO a 20ft line is long) to get it from ma kitchen sink to a brute next to the tank to make SW. For top off, I have 5G jugs that I just put in the sink and forget about periodically, leaving gallons of water all over :p

+1 I love my 5 stage plus. I did a review on it long ago if that helps.

ill say the 75 gpd brs 4 stage economy unit is pretty good. I have never used another but my water is clean and good. some people prefer to have a 5 or 6 stage unit. whichever you get make sure you at least get a dual tds meter, it helps a lot with determining when you need filter service.

+1 on BRS 75gpd unit ... I bought one and it is probably the best investment so far ... And it comes with tons of different attachments for easy hook up anywhere ..

This is what I have too.

Purchasing a RODI unit is a great investment. It will help control phosphates, algae, and unwanted elements in your tank. I think whatever manufacturer you choose you will be happy with. I decided on a Spectrapure mostly because of cost and ease/availability of replacing filters. I recommend purchasing the highest output while still fitting in your budget. A 90 GPD unit creates 5 gallons in just under 60 min. If you have a dedicated sink or mess room you might be just as happy with a lower output unit.

You will want to buy a filter that has a TDS meter built in or buy a separate meter. I believe a TDS meter costs about 12$. It will let you know when its time to replace filters and the effectiveness of your filter.

Optimum water pressure for a RODI unit is 80psi. Water pressure does not need to be at 80 psi but operating under low water pressure will take longer to make filtered water, it will create more waste water, and shorten the life of your membrane. Making weekly water for top offs and water changes for a 30 gallon tank your filters (under optimum settings) should last close to two years. Some units come with a booster pump to raise your PSI or you can purchase a separate pump later should you decide it is needed.

Check craigslist, i picked up my 6 stage unit for $30

Depending on the condition though, if you have to pick up a new membrane, filters, and resin, you're almost better going new with BRS. They're surprisingly not very expensive and a good investment. Glad yours is working for ya though!!

Even with filters, tds, and pressure gauge i think it was still less then $100. Not bad for a probably 200+$ unit

No, I agree, but with a membrane that runs $30-50, a 5-stage BRS is $159.99, and at that point, you might as well buy new and not worry about damage you can't see at the time of purchase.

I wish I bought the biggest BRS kit at first. My 5 stage became a 6 stage. Then a water drinking kit. Then a permeate pump which IMO is required if you have a pressurized tank. Then a second faucet for RO feed to basement sink for rinsing equipment in 4ppm TDS instead of RO/DI. Ditched the 5 micron carbon block for a 1 micron sediment. Next is a booster pump, second dual TDS meter, and a silicabuster and max cap DI's.

sweet..tons of input! thanks every 1! i think ill look into 75 gpd brs.

whats the difference/significance between 4 stage or 5 or 6 stage?

4 stage = 5 micron sediment > 5 micron carbon > membrane > DI
5 stage = 5 micron sediment > 5 micron carbon > .6 micron carbon > membrane > DI
6 stage = 5 micron sediment > 5 micron carbon > .6 micron carbon > membrane > DI > DI
