I have started to see a few patches of this growing on the rocks and I'm not sure what it is any ideas?

ok thank you I wasn't sure. I'm glad I asked because it does look pretty cool, but I don't want a problem.

pillow shaped. the closed thing I can think of that it looks like is a bubble tip anemone without a mouth

I'm thinking a form of red bubble algea. I've had some grow in odd shapes over the years. It can be quite agressive, but not as bad as some of the green bubble algea species.

I thought it was bubble algea but I don't think so now that i pulled a peice out. It is more rubber like texture and rips instead of popping.

You're describing red bubble algea to a T. The filling is also slightly goopy or slimey.

Oh I guess that would be it then. Thank you for your help

wouldn't count on emerald crabs to eat any of your nuisance algae. just grab a scalpel and take it out yourself before it spreads but turn off your blowers so you can catch it otherwise you'll make it spread. I had that red macro in my tank. it's nice at first but it spread all over in my tank. i have it under control now but i'm still spending a hour / week scraping that off. Down to the last few pieces that i can see hopefully it worked. good luck
