Indie film producer seeking fish for film shoot

Hello Chicago Reefs,

I am an indie film producer in Chicago. We are shooting a film in a couple weeks and would like to feature a fish and aquarium in our film. I have never cared for fish and am trying to figure out the proper way to do this. I thought maybe some of you could help or offer advice.

The main character is supposed to talk to her pet fish in her living room. I don't have an aquarium or fish in my apartment. We hypothesized buying a tank and whatever supplies we need, but then aren't sure where to get the fish. I don't necessarily want to buy a fish and become a pet fish owner just for the film, although that thought has crossed my mind. I wonder if we could find someone else with a nice fish that we could safely transport to and from my apartment. Can any of you offer any advice?

Without knowing anything about fish, I found some pictures of fish that I think look nice for the character:

Any advice is much appreciated!

The first pic looks like a Gourami (freshwater) and the third looks like an Oscar (freshwater). I'm not sure about the one in the second pic (some sort of freshwater carp?) but the fourth is a saltwater fish (an Angel, maybe). Starting a tank would take a week at the minimum and that's using bottled bacteria. I believe most owners would be a little apprehensive about loaning their fish out for the day also.

IMO the cheapest and fastest solution would be to find a local fish store and offer them some promotional credit to get the fish and get help with the set up.

Call tank it easy. Ask to talk with Brian. This seems like something they would possibly be interested in and are capable of the tank setup.

Thanks for the suggestions, goat585 and trackfast! It does seem like finding a fish store to help is the way to go. I actually went by Tank it Easy on Friday and talked to them and they might be interested, but I got the impression that the whole operation would be easier with a freshwater situation. I'm guessing ChicagoReefs is primarily for people interested in saltwater aquarium life? Is there another forum someone can recommend where I could connect with freshwater aquarium enthusiasts? Or could you guys recommend a fish store that focuses on freshwater aquariums? Is that a different world? Do you guys think this makes sense? Thanks!

There are no real freshwater only forums locally that I'm aware of. You could contact the greater Chicago cichlid association. There are members that have large fish and they are use to moving them around for shows. I believe the site is www.gcca.net

There are some other stores that do more freshwater tanks. I just cant think of one that has a maintenance department where they move or setup aquariums.

You might be able to find some local enthusiasts on aquariumadvice.com. Most stores would have saltwater and freshwater sections I think. I know Pro Reef Corals / AquaPros has a separate area for freshwater.
