Instead of my planned 60 gallon cube upgrade...

So...my plans to upgrade from my 24 gallon nano to a 60 cube have fallen thru. So I went on the hunt for either a 28 gallon nano or 29 gallon biocube which would allow me to maximize the existing footprint and keep my wonderful wife happy! :) Was able to pickup a 29 gallon biocube with stand and hood - and a brand new hood in the box - for $100!

I had purchased a radion g2 and have found someone who has fitted the radion into the biocube hood! So that is my plan. The biggest issue I had with my current setup is the lack of control on the lights and that they were only 13 1.3w leds(JBJ's first venture into an led hood). So now with the new setup I am planning on drilling it like my current setup to use with the custom sump I have. Have a full Apex that will control the radion and MP10w. I had purchased a 2nd MP10w for the 60 but figure 2 in a 29 gallon cube would be overkill.

I am also contemplating removing the false wall on the 29 and just putting a shorty overflow with 2 returns. Thoughts? I will already be drilling it for the overflow to the sump. Figure if I remove the false wall I would get more sand space for the acans I love! Although in my current setup I do hide a heater in there along with the one in my sump...

Let me know your thoughts!

I HIGHLY reccomend against drilling the 24g nanocubes. I have done three. The glass is unbelievably thin. One of the cracked just sitting there. Nothing on the glass, nothing touching it. One of them cracked driving in the car, and one of them cracked when the pump kicked back on after "standby" mode. You would be better off buying a 25g Mr. Aqua cube and hanging the radion over it if you want to drill. You can easily sell your nanocube for the cost of the Mr. Aqua and some conduit to hang the light.

Thanks for the reply!
My 24 gallon is already drilled and I have a sump in the stand. Just considering doing the same with the 29 gallon Biocube I just picked up.

i drilled my 29 bio cube with 3 holes , built overflow for one drain and 2 returns and removed rim and false wall . was kinda a pain but not bad . i wouldnt put a radion in that hood tho just me . with top losed alot of humidity and such in there . it wss a fun lil build and i really liked extra depth . good luck and keep us posted

Yeah, trade the Biocube for the Mr. Aqua and hang the light. Rimless look is much better too!

Wife absolutely HATES the open top look with the light hanging over it! Biggest reason my upgrade fell thru was due to the fact I could not come up with a plan for the stand and canopy that would look good in the corner where we have the current tank!

Hey Rick .. they all hate the Open Top untill they see one ..

if you want i did turn the 29 biocube and hang a Razor over it .. and even my Wife said the same thing till she looked at it and now says it looks much better than the Decorative style with the hood.

you are welcome to come over anytime and she can look at my tank :) i bet she would change the mind and you get the 60 ;)

You all obviously do not know my wife! :)
I have shown her hundreds of pics and she has seen tanks 1st hand. The glow of the lighting outside of the tank drives her nuts. She does not even like it when I open the hood with the lights on!
Now I am NOT making fun of my wonderful better half. She has kept me for 33 years so...happy wife happy life. Old saying but OH SO TRUE!

My wife was the same way. My tank sits in the livingroom. She hated the open idea and all the light but she is coming around. She now appreciates when we pull up at night and there is a blue glow coming from my home.

I seen a jbj with the wall taken out. I think brian has one on here as a frag tank that i got to see in person. It definitely gives you more space to mess with.

As we have already talked, i will be doing the same lighting in my hood. It is good that you have the extra hood to play with too. The thread that guy had was nice. I'd like to stay in close contact with you while you do this so let me know how it goes.

On a side note, eddie and skull..... sweet tanks!

That one isn't mine. Just a floating canopy tank I found on google. Here is my pair of drilled 24g Nanocubes though:

Now I just have to find where to get this drilled or buy the bits myself. REALLY leaning towards taking out the filter wall and drilling the overflow with probably one return. Starting to think that maybe I will keep that extra MP10w and have two! And if I could only squeeze that NWB200 into my sump... :)

Two MP10 is a waste on a tank like that. They will have to be turned down super low. Sell it and buy something for your wife with the $$, then get the damn rimless tank!
