So I'm still setting up my frag tank and I wanted to know if the return pump I got is to much.my tank is 24x18x8 the pump is a quite one 4000 (991 Gph). There will be 4ft of head and a dual return nozzle.i thought I would go this big because I was hoping it would be enough flow in my tank without a powerhead.does putting a ball valve on the return strain it out? I never had to reduce flow in any of my tanks so I don't know.

No not really.a 24" tank with a close loop would be cool...

I know I can add the valve but will it have a affect on the pump.

Its ok to restrict the output of that pump, just not recommended to choke the intake
the valve will basically make the pump see more head pressue is all, which will lower the flow like you are wanting.
its not energy efficient , but if you already have the pump thats the way to use it properly.
