Island Aquascaping

I am curious what the general consensus in regards to making islands in your aquascape if you have sand. I have heard some people say it is OK as is minimizes dead spots in the tank. But doesn't it create a dead spot inside the island and under it?

The reason I ask is that my new tank is a 3' x 3' x 18" cube so I was thinking of having islands. Since I have a Dusky Jawfish a DSB is a must. Would islands be a good idea or a bad one?

A DSB in an 18" tall tank? You should go open top, and build 1 or 2 taller islands that come out of the water. A simple aqua lifter plumbed strategically would supply enough water to keep the exposed rock saturated, and you could even make a tide pool lagoon in one part of the tank as well, your options are endless with a little creativity. Islands would be no problem, you will always get lower flow areas, regardless how you scape, so just do what you want to look good and correct flow issues with good placement of powerheads. This sounds like a really fun tank build, I look forward to seeing it completed.

Also I should say that it is not a true DSB. Only 2-3 inches at most. I just need an area for my Dusky Jawfish to burrow.
