While browsing the frag swap saturday I stoped at Mark Vera's table (phyto) and he had 3 small bags on the side 1 was a small urchin one was a mangrove and the last was these 2 small chips of monti caps he said he got directly from Julian Sprung. Now being kinda new to the hobby my son said this is cool, so I bought them. So now Im wondering is this a good catch or are they pretty common, they are starting to color up now and they are starting to look nice anyone know anything about them?View attachment 7830

Yeah I just hope he wasn't took cause the seller put someones name on it also him being a newer reefer that would suck

No I paid $20 for the 2 frags and I already glued 1 to a rock and gave the other to my son I was just wondering if it was anything unique or just common. But Thanks it"s coloring up real nice and I like it thats all that matters. and my son is happy he thinks its cool. He's realy in to saltwater.

Chances are it will turn out to be very nice. My guess is that Julian doesn't keep cruddy coral.

Seriously...I think it's cool to think it came from Julian's tank. I would make room for piece from him before Tyree or Fox. Nothing wrong with buying something because of it's origin if you appreciate it and it's legit, especially since you didn't get robbed. There was no ridic mark up and you get a piece from a rockstar.

I guess I should rephrase my heading mark did not sell it as a julian sprung monti cap he said it came directly from him. my son called it that. and thanks jay

It doesn't matter who's tank it came out of. It's blue sympodium, purple rim monti and armor of God palys. For $20, that's a good buy.

only the 2 monti caps for 20 the others i had for a while a large piece and a small one which is in the pic.

If it looks good, and you think it's worth $20, good for you. I always prefer a coral's look vs. its name or lineage, which in my mind is worthless in this hobby, which is based on looks alone. I once had an "un-named", wild colony of an Aussie acro that completely blew away anything I ever saw, including the most expensive, "named" corals.

I agree, but sometimes its hard to find that diamond in the rough. That's why my tank is a combo of fancy-name pieces and some really cool simpletons. I have this wicked magenta table that is turning awesome and I bought an 1" for $10 from a lfs, fresh off the boat. It was barley pink when I bought it and now it is truly a stunning color. (fast grower too :) )

thats cool I picked up one of windycitys grab bag for $10 I cant wait to see what it colors up to be eric wont tell what they are untill they do. Thats part of the fun in this hobby finding a dimond in the rough.
