Little help?

Ok my angel is really being destructive now and ripping apart my corals.
I just set up another tank with rock I've have in salt water with pumps and heater not live anymore thou and I just put water in it 3 days ago completely with water from my main tank along with a little bit of cheato and temp is around 79 to 81 but my main tank is usually between 75 and 78 and my question is how long before I should transfer the corals over and is there anything else I should do to the tank before I transfer the corals. I have 2 65 watt bulbs for lighting also. No mechanical filtration yet but I have a h.o.b. filter I can hang on the side for now, and ya I know the return pump is a little big but its the only one I had. Thanks

Unless someone want to take the angel off my hands hes about 5 inches and in the middle of changing to adult coloration. Will take more pics if anyone is interested. $100

Looks like you have it all plumbed as one system? If so, all you really did was add water volume and more dry rock to an established system. I'd say it's safe to assume without making any major additions to the system, you could move the corals over now if you want. The existing live rock is still going to handle filtration while the new rock is established.

I don't trust any angels, unless they come from a reefer's tank & proven to be reef safe. Been there, done that.

No that's not connected to the main system. But now that you said it I think I will take a couple of rocks and a cup or 2 of sand out on the main system and put them in this one. The pictures are of a 20 gal into a 15 gal into a 10 gal my main system is a 125 with a 55 gal sump/fuge , the rock and sand in there were from a system I helped break down for a friend but is was a fowlr and all the rocks were white as can be and I never seen and pods or anything in them when I had them in a tank on the side so I dont think they were ever live rock or if they were that GIANT uv filter he had on there killed it all. sorry for confusion

Ok yea, it's a fresh system then and needs to go thru a full cycle. Too bad you can't just plumb that setup into your main system and let it rock-n-roll.

Ive had the angel since it was about an inch or so and he just started picking on the corals in the past month or two since he been changing color. here's a pic of him in march 2010

I wish I could but then I would have to put holes in walls and a lot of major modifications believe me I've already thought about it.

I wish you were not so far away Gus or else I would try to catch him right now. What if I threw a few pieces of rock and some sand from my 125? How long do you think it would take to cycle?

So even thou the sand and rock I have in there now has been in a tank with salt water, a powerhead and filtration for 3 or 4 months now its still going to take a while because there is no pods or anything in the rock?

just a thought but what if you had a tank to put the angel in and just used water from the tank its in now like your water change make a little cave for him and leave that running until you sell him then work on your new system not the best option but until you get it sold it will save corals or am i missing something

Oh when you put it that way, then yes, that rock would be "live" even if there hasn't been any light on it to grow algae or cause a diatom bloom, and even if there are no pods. You can seed pods to jump start the population. What you are looking for is a healthy tank with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites. Throw in a bit of frozen food and check those levels in a day or two, if you don't see any, it's good to go!

Cool I'm going to throw a nice size rock and a cup or two of sand from the main tank to seed it. Will a piece or two of freeze dried jumbo krill work or would the frozen food work better?

anything that was alive and will start rotting in the tank will be fine. Its just a check that the tank is consuming the ammonia and nitrites being produced.

Ok thanks fishbeard I threw in a couple pieces of freeze dried jumbo krill and I'll be throwing in some sand and rocks from the main tank in the morning so hopefully I'll be able to throw the corals in there in a few days. Hopefully lol Because I really want to watch him change into adult coloration but after that I think my tank is just a bit small for him and he will for sure have to go to a much larger tank.
