Live Blackworms as Food

There were some Qs about using blackworms as a food for our SW fish/corals. I purchase a pound every 10 days or so, from Coral Reef for <$20. Best price anywhere, even on the net. I ask to see them for myself, before purchasing. Sometimes they look like crap. I generally scoop them out into the bag myself, because under the healthy live ones can be a bunch of smelly dead ones & believe me, you don't want those! I rinse well, when I get them home.

I split them into 2 Coolwhip containers (one for FW fish, one for SW), with holes cut into the top. Very little water--just enough to keep them moist. The FW one get FW Vita-Chem & ground flakes, FD krill/plankton. The SW ones get Selcon, SW Vita-Chem & the same food. I rinse them daily in a brine shrimp net, whether I feed out to the fish or not. The corals catch them too.

If they start to look like a lot of them are dead, I toss the whole thing.

I just saw a simple set-up to grow them yesterday! The EAT paper bags?? did you know that. The system is as simple as a small traym aqualifter, and piece of egg crate.

They need to be kept cool, I forgot to mention I keep them in my fridge. Matt Pederson raises them in his basement.

I found blackworms to be key for picky eaters. once the fish get over the wiggling aspect the cant get enough. highly recommended for butterflys and picky wrasses

hence the guy I saw growing them! didn't know you were on here! funny all this talk of black worms all of a sudden

I love feeding my SW and FW fish and corals live blackworms. I rinse them a ton before each feeding and keep them in my fridge. I also use a vitamin soak with them. There's a local FW fish store that sells them fairly cheap and is close to me so I don't buy more than a few oz. at a time and it seems I have little to no die off this way. When I bought by the lb. it seemed I was always throwing some away because I'm a better safe than sorry guy so when some were dead I'd throw all of them away.

Jeni, I know this is a super old post, but, do you still get these and do you get them locally? I'm leery about ordering them from California...

Does anyone feed their fish these (live) ? Where do you get yours? Thanks in advance!

Thanks Joe, those stores are a decent drive from me, hopefully more chime in and I can find some closer lol. Actually I need to look up Ocean Design, not sure where that is! Thanks again!
