live rock/dry rock tank upgrade

Upgrading from my 40 acrylic to a glass 65 RR. I don't like the rock I have I feel like its a contributing factor to my algae problems. It was purchased from a fellow reefer. I have had a lot of trouble buying live rock always comes with pests or leaching phosphates etc. So is there a good cheap SAFE place to buy live rock or should I just go with dry rock? If dry rock where is a good place to get it. Also I will be using my 6x39w tek light that I have on my 40 on my 65 so the light needs to stay there until I can move all of my coral and fish to the 65 so do I need a light to cure the dry rock in the 65 if I go that route or is it better to do it lights off? Please any advice would be great this is the biggest stumbling block of my upgrade. Tiy.:nerd:

B,

I would say go with dry rock. It will easily be seeded with a handful of sand from an existing tank. This will ensure that you don't get any nasties in your tank, unless you've put them in there.

David at Aquapros has some rock, but I am not sure it was Marco Rock. I didn't quite like what I saw.

Candidly speaking, I would suggest you make a trip back to New Fish in the city for their Marco Rock so you can hand pick your pieces and make a mess on their floor. I don't like blind ordering bulk rock and being stuck with a bunch of chunks I don't like or have to chisel, which will probably end up as rock rubble because of my elderly hands and fear of breaking my fingers. It's the same price as ordering online at Marcorocks.com I beleive.

And since you will be in the city looking at their rock, you can come fix my **** ceiling fan!!!

No light is necessary to cycle a tank. Heck, you can just use a 30 gallon brute can with a heater and powerhead to cycle from dry. Leave it in the garage to stink up in there instead of in your home.

Ok so no light a cup full of live sand from another tank should I still throw a table shrimp in or no?

Yup....or some pellet or flakes for them to eat. You don't want the bacteria to die.

I threw in 2 baby clowns....but folks might go off on you for doing that. Mine did just fine in there and I still have them.

Hmmm ok that makes things nice and easy for me. Walt could you possibly spare a cup full of sand in the near future? I think.I'm going to switch to special grade reef sand on this tank?

Of course! We'll scoop out a cup from my fuge. It's chock full of pods, tubeworms and goodies. You can have some chaeto too.

Raw shrimp is my recommendation. This fish you use would probably survive but they would still have to swim in ammonia while the tank cycled.
