Local Selling Pledge

I remember a while ago we had a pledge thread promising to be nice on Chicago Reefs. I would like to extend this myself to selling as I see reefing as a hobby where we should help out our local fellow reefers and not a way to profit. Therefore, to all full members of Chicagoreefs, I pledge the following:

- I will not sell if I have any known pests
- I will not sell corals for more than 50% of the full retail price. (friends may get better deals)
- If I sell corals that were originally given to me, I will first pay back the gifter until I've given them at least 50% of the retail value.

Please feel free to add your views and comments.

+1 or not to take advanyage of anyone to make a quick buck lesson well learned

This hobby is hard enough on the average and during the bad times it brutal to keep a tank up. We've all seen so many people come and go in the hobby.

Helping contribute to someone else's pain by selling goods for full market value when you got it for less...
For moving goods from a tank when you know the pests you have, will end up causing someone else all the pain you've gone through having them...
Or just simply using the community to make a buck without regards for the community...

Take a moment to think about it, this community wouldn't be here without those who believe like bryman. Or for the others who do PIF for frags or other goods from their tanks. If you disagree, I challenge you to look at ReefCentral CMAS forum. To look at ebay and craigslist. If you are out there to use others, at least have a little compassion and do it elsewhere.

I agree to a certain extent first ive givin away tons of stuff and honestly what u do with it after is up to u but it will affect what u get from me for now on unless we r good friends then u do what ever the hell u want with it but thats just me . Second it pisses me off to see the boldness of people with 1 post asking for free stuff only because u usually never see them again ive personally took time out my life to help sombody then poof gone never seen again so most people that bought from me paid first time and then we became friends and never paid again because its the ones willing to pay that r the most generous usually on here . I just dont want to see people joining cr because there friends say hey join this forum these idiots give there chit away free and trust me people have come up to me and said that so theres gotta be limits not everyone out there is in it for the long haul or for the hobby so i do agree with this pledge to a point but i make my own rules on who and what to charge . U can tell alot from just watching what someone post on there first 25 post i wont even deal with some one padding post then bam number 25 is sale thread because they dont go past post 30 before they r gone

I'm going to speak my mind . A well known member sold me a couple items for a certain price higher for what they were asking for on the forum post. Yes its my fault for not looking for the price they were asking before i bought the items. Thats what i get for trusting people dont get me wrong i have met great people here. It jus pisses me off that some one would take advantage jus to gain an extra 15 bucks ! i get its only 15 but its the morales behind it but u kno what, i have learned a valuable lesson............

I just don't believe everyone is deserving of such kindness. I too have made countless good deals and bad.fact is you get nothing if your a staranger or i feel you don't respect what it is we do here. I'll play nice with those I see fit. Way to many fly buyers want hand outs the close and sell it off. I've seen my free stuff for sale tons of times. Again not every one is deserving of kindness

I agree with the sentiment, for the most part, but the 50% of retail is a bit much if I paid full retail.

I give quite a bit of free stuff away, but I don't post it up. I don't post free stuff because it typically draws out the same people, and often ones who have no reputation here (aka, people I don't want in my house). I typically post up stuff at a deep discount and then load the buyer up with free stuff when they're at my house.

+1 verbatim buddy :) i feel the same ..
i have given stuff to many ppl on here and i don't care what they do with it .. but how i respond to them after that completely depends ... and it feels good to receive a text after a year of giving away asking what they should do with it as a grown out piece as they are out of real estate or something and i gladly told them to do whatever ,sell, make money .. its their wish ..

i think i can kinda guess who that vendor might be .. but here is what happens with me most of the time when i post stuff, when i post them to get them out of my tank i post them really cheap and not a set number, its what ever that comes to mind and i think ill be able to free space soon, someone texts me after say 4 weeks of the post i had to go back and look for what i posted and tell them that price .. say someone comes over and asks for that piece i go back to the post on my phone and see what i posted it for .. but everyone may not be as tech savvy and care enough to go back and see and may quote you a little higher price, it doesnt essentially mean they are trying to rob you of that extra 10 bucks .. it simply means they dont remember what they posted it for :) so its on you to check the post and ask them about it ... just my opinion.

+1 again .. and why do i feel like you are making more and more meaningful posts these days ? :p go back to jerk mode haha ..

I think it's sad there even needs to be a thread about this honestly, but in this day and age, unfortunately, it's a must. I haven't been on much lately, but have dealt with alot of great people, and a few not so great. Goes back to the old saying "treat people as you would want to be treated". It's not that hard!

Know just who your talking about, that really blows but after all getting kicked in the nutz a few times its easy now to know who the great ones are .
Happy Holidays

the bad part is even when you treat people the way you wanna be treated, they still turn around and bite u in the ^@*. i will give my stuff away to a unknow stranger as i just have the other day, i may not have anything high end but hey if it helps them thats grate. but as every one said when you step boundrys and screw people over it makes it less unfortunatefor the ones that deserve help in the hobby, i see how every one is here its a tight knite grope here but at the ened i see every one trying to help with all means when they can. i am glad i found this site and i plan on being here a long time till i know longer can afored itt any ways lol but i dont see that for a long long long time ps sorry about my speeling not my forte i am a beer guy for crying out loud hahahahahaha

My brother and I touched on this subject a few days ago. I've gotten a few things free on this forum and more than that, a wealth of advice from the people I've met. The largest thing I got was my 65 gal set-up, which really opened up my options. I'm soon going to buy a 75 gal set-up, mostly because I hate how tall the 65 gal is. That 3 inches makes a difference. This set-up will go to someone who can use it, just like I needed it a few months ago. I just got some Xenia from someone a week ago and they gave me some great advice about an algae problem I have; it's decreased by 80% in a week! The things I have been gifted by members here encouraged me to pay it forward when the time comes, so that someone else can be excited about the hobby, as I am.

Great thread!

One of the things I always liked about reefing is that everyone was very helpful, especially in the beginning when I didn't know much. I've experienced a great deal of generosity from people. Usually you can figure out who is in it for the hobby, and who is in it to make a quick buck. I think we all know who falls into the latter group.

I've met a lot of really cool people through CR, many who I'm very close friends with now.

Some of the things I've seen people do on here have caused me to shake my head almost like I was having an epileptic seizure. I've seen people buy a nem, nearly kill it, and then try to sell it to someone else, and MARK IT UP more than what they paid. They sold it and it ended up dying on the person who bought it. IMHO, that's one of the most disgusting things you can do to a fellow reefer. Well that and knowingly giving them pests.

But to be honest, the bad apples are outweighed by the good apples. Obviously we all feel strongly about this hobby and when we see people that have either lost sight of why we have reef aquariums, or never had it to begin with, we get angry.

We're a community of people that come from different backgrounds, different upbringing, religion, political affiliations, etc. but we all share reefing in common.

It goes right back to that old cliche, treat others as you wish to be treated. If everyone followed that, reefing, and quite frankly the entire world would be a much better place.

This is a double edged sword. I had my last 500g SPS system wiped out by AEFW which I got from a local reefer, which by the way I didn't quarantine and opened my self up to. The worms were a nuisance I wish I had lived with, the following aggressive treatments are where I destroyed my tank. I never played the blame game, the only way the worms ended up in my tank was because I let them in there. After watching thousands of dollars of corals go up in flames, I will just say to treat everything like it is infected with every known bug. Quarantine, quarantine, quarantine,

Now on to the pricing. I had a lot of high end stuff at the time, some of which grew like weeds. In turn selling frags of Tyree's PL for $15 caused more issues than if I had priced them at $50-$100 a frag.

As far as the wisdom gained along the way, it was priceless. I learned it the hard way, but it was the best lesson I could have hoped for. I just didn't see it then.

I once heard it said best, knowledge is gained when you read the instructions, wisdom is gained when you don't.
