macro algae in display tank

hi

just curious,
why shouldnt we have macro algae in main tank .. ?? is it just cause it grows too much and unsightly ??

Some of them look cool. I had that grass maiden hair for awhile and it looked cool, until it went sexual on me and kinda juts melted away multiple times and comes back.
Any other macros, my tang eats them.

Yea, macro algae is best left unseen, or in an area it doesn't become food for certain fish and inverts. There are many non-invasive marine plants you can decorate your display tank with if that's the look you want to go for.

Halimeda, some sponge forms, and several red/purple species are very safe in display without getting crazy. Just remember, like any plant, it will grow where it will put roots, and will need trimming.

Halimeada is pretty neat stuff, but keep in mind that it sucks down calcium like nobodys business. May not be a great choice depending on the type of reef you are keeping, even if it's used in a fuge...

Oops, sorry about the spelling, lol. I knew it used a lot of calcium, but that much? I thought it was like waht coralline took up? Although it would be a lot more halimeada than rock coating....

I think you have it spelled right. No extra a in there at the end. Enough of it to look good it's going to compete with your corals for calcium. One or two small strands not so much. It does also go sexual on occasion so you need to be careful for that as well.

That is a pretty cool plant indeed! Had some LR that was covered in it once. Real nice addition to a display, once I started to move up to SPS I removed it. I also scrap most of my coralline on the glass too.

I am really fond of mangroves too! Although most of our tanks are a little too deep in some instances. Good hunting Tinman!
