Making some flow.

Hi, just a general question, on a 120 gallon tank (4×2×2) is it better to have 1 MP40 or 2 MP40s going back and forth. I do have some SPS in the tank and using just one MP40 now. The height of it is about a third down from the rim. If I did add a second what height level would it have to be. Opinions appreciated

I was told i would need two mp40 for my 75 gal sps tank so id imagine u would be told the same maybe even more just my guess. Sps do love flow so i went the wp route hell my cars aint worth tge price of two mp40s

I would also go with at least two pumps. If you wanted another MP40 the price for new ones just dropped which means there are a lot of deals on used ones. With two MP40s or whatever pumps you choose I would place them exactly opposite of each other on the sides; maybe about 1/4 to 1/3 down from the rim.

The other option is to chuck the MP40 and get a Gyre.... I have one on my 180 and run it at 50% and have plenty of flow. Less stuff in your tank and about the same price as getting a new MP.

I have a 90g (48 x 18 x 24) w/ 2 x MP40's and the flow is good but nothing compared to my 105g (48 x 24 x 21) with a Gyre. Neither pump is better than the other, they're very different types of flow and controllability. In your situation, I personally would keep the MP40 and add a Gyre.

Note, if your looking for maximum flow, the Gyre is has far greater laminar flow and circulation.

Well if this helps any I ran 1 mp40 in my 75 all Sps and anyone that has seen my tank when it was running can say thing we're growing pretty good .

I've seen the Gyre, looks like it can do the job, but I'm a fan of " if its not broke don't fix it" so I guess I'm an MP40 guy. I know the Grye can push some water like mad at a lower cost, I just like the MP for its different settings and at least to me the company has always been good and back their products.

I like both pumps so I'm not pitching either, but I do want to clarify that the Gyre does have different settings, though very limited in comparison to the MP40wes. Just buy both. Lol..

i would keep them at the same level on opposite ends. if you go with one, just put it on the opposite side of the overflow if you have corner overflows. that way you have a cross flow which is great.

in my 4x2x2 , one mp40 isn't enough unless you like pretty low flow on the far side. I've got 2 mp40 on the ends facing each other, but also had to add mp10s on the back bottom to get more flow under the rock work.

Picked up a second MP40, now I have to decide which mode to go with. I like to keep it about 50%. The one I have now is on my 120 running in short pulse mode. I was thinking of going reef crest mode, any opinions? I have a great mix of corals in the tank, just an fyi

Thanks for all of the replies and input. I went with reef crest, antisync, one notch under 50%, we'll see how that works.

Well going to pick up another mp40 today from aquatica , after getting the water in the tank and running 1 mp40 I can defiantly tell there is not enough flow , Mario gave me a demo on the gyre and imo I think the mp40 for the same price is the better choice for me.
