one mp40 is good for that tank, the mp40 is efficient up to a 3ft distance from the propellor. You will also be able to run it slower so it wont make as much mechanical noise as the dry side motor runs.
If you have the room, you could set up a closed loop instead for less than half the price. You could run a mag 18 for $100. Black krylon to cover the pvc, and you'll have more flow and can randomize it with scwds or timers as well. Not knocking the MP10/40, but pricewise, it can be an awesome flow source without dropping as much cash.
Unfortunately, my tank isn't drilled so I don't think I can set that up. Trying to make my tank less cluttered since I don't have a sump to hide everything in.
The pair of MP10's would work better at an even flow in my opinion. They have a newly designed wetside the same design as the 60 and better than the 40. You will end up with one on each side. I love my pair of MP40's on my 6' tank. I run one in slave mode and I can do all sorts of water motion. These pumps are a lot more high tech than you think and their effect on corals is amazing. The design is super clean and well worth it. IF you ever get a larger tank the tens will work for a frag tank. FYI the 10's are only good for up to .375 glass so nothing bigger then a 125.
I have a 55g sps with two mp10 wireless on slave mode as well. Both on nutrient transport mode. I was blown away when i discovered all different options you have. I was in the same yacht as you, i couldn't decide on mp10 or 40. If you go with 2, make sure you get "mp10wes." They are worth the extra 40 bucks or whatever it is. Be advised, ecotechs are a little louder then you think. This is normal but well worth the reward. i have read that mp40's can be the loudest. Oh and I don't want to start any rumors, but i tested my mp10s on .5in glass because i plan to upgrade to a 75g rimless and they work just fine. Obviously didn't hold as well as thinner glass but still did a great job.
I just got a mp40 for my new build and threw it in my 60g. WOW! It moves a gang of water! It ripped my frags right off the rocks! There are so many wave modes it's not funny! I've had it since Friday and have been playing with it all weekend and I'm STILL finding new modes! I run it at low flow with a long pulse setting of 30 seconds. Looks like a surge in my tank. The ecotech website has some great instructional videos...
So I decided to go with 2 mp10s. I would like to have an even flow all around the tank. I can also sync both and make some nice waves and currents.
I have no intention of upgrading my reef. If for whatever reason I do, I will just sell one and replace with the MP40. At the moment, I have only bought 1 mp10wes which is on the way so I may still get an mp40 instead of another mp10 if I can find a good deal.
Got one of my mp10s in and I have to say, I am loving it. One doesn't really do much on my 65 but the other one is coming in tomorrow and I can imagine how well they would work together after I sync them. Still trying to figure out the settings and right mode.
Linking them is very simple, its like a 3 step process. After that, I suggest going into Lagoon Mode on Anti-Sync and adjust total power output based on how happy your corals look, I would try like 4-5 dots on the controller to start with and go up 1 dot every couple days until you can see where your corals are happiest.
I have 2 MP10s in my 36" long tank and my coral love it turned all the way up. I'm considering getting an MP40 because I don't think the MP10s are doing all that well together.
