mp10 question

I have a 75 gallon reef and I cant afford an MP40 right now. I only keep lps and softies presently. Nothing "high" flow. Could I get away with one MP10 until I can afford two. Ecotech says probably but I was hoping for practical experience?

Practical usage, don't waste the money on a 10 for a 75g. You really should have 2 40s. A single 10 would need to be maxed out to provide any kind of usable flow in the tank, and that's a stretch.

ok thanks for that :) this is what confuses a newbie like me. I would love two MP-40s but even running them at only 50 percent would give me 46x turnover ? Not to mention I don't have 900.00 for pumps. Is that really how much flow is necessary ? Is 20x minimum an absolute myth?

Well keep in mind that since they are adjustable you don't need to run them at full speed or even at 50%. The 40 is nice because you can set it low for normal operation, and crank it up to export nutrients and stir up detritus for maintenance. Also, a 40 running low speed is going to be a lot quieter than a 10 cranked up to achieve the same flow. The 40 also has a wider more gentle flow pattern than the 10 does. You could always look into a used single 40 and see if that is enough flow for you, and add a 2nd later. You don't really need to buy them brand new, most used ones will be in as good a condition as a new one, and replacement parts are available for pretty reasonable prices to overhaul the pumps if they ever need it.

I have seen with my own eyes running 2 MP10 wireless model on a 75gal with softies.. Not sure what percentage he has them running.. But it looked good IMO!!!

Everything had a nice wave :D

Dre and Eric are both correct! From my experience you will get better results with the larger unit. I had to run my MP10 almost @ 100% to match the MP40 and get a decent wave.

I ended up just saving for another MP40 and put the MP10 on my 29 biocube. Hope this helps.
