Murder Mystery

We're not sure what happened but somehow we've lost 3 things in our tank overnight. Everything has been fine for the past 4 months. Earlier today we saw that our maxima clam looked weird and I was pretty sure that it died. Then while looking around vucious noticed that our goby and shrimp were missing (presumed dead - we looked everywhere for them). Everything was there and fine in the tank yesterday. I know Vu tested a couple things with the water (ammonia and nitrate?) and both looked good. Any thoughts on who done it?

2 clown fish
Scooter fish
6 line wrasse
Blue damsel
Turbo snail
Emerald crab
Hermit crabs
Other? Like maybe water?

I'm a complete newbie so I don't know much at all and will have to wait for Vu to explain more but just thought I'd post. (I personally think the emerald crab ate the shrimp and the goby and then that somehow messed the water up and that's how the clam died haha) Everything else in the tank still looks healthy. We know that sometimes things happen out of nowhere but it just sucks when you're not sure what went wrong. We're sad. :(

Here's a picture of our poor dead clam that I loved so much.

My gobie and shrimp dissapeared for two months then bam they back now i cant get rid of them dont count them out just yet . A dieing clam can muck up water though. But i doubt it bet they just hiding

What? 2 months??? Really??! We thought maybe the goby could be hiding but the shrimp is pretty big so usually there's nowhere for him to hide... a part of him is usually sticking out somewhere.

Clam need 2 thing Calcium and Light (Med. flow).

I think some pest killed the clam. I'm going to take down this 29g and start off fresh with the 75g after dipping all the corals.

I don't know how you guys continue after a big crash. Pretty devastated after losing just the clam. :blue:

This is the nature of the game, you'll lose more clams, corals, fish, etc. over time. It's just what happens when you take things out of their natural habitat and stick them in a little box requiring almost constant attention. The good part is, over time you'll learn how to deal with different things in different ways and casualties will decrease dramatically. Keep it up, and go SLOW with the 75.

Thanks, Ted. This is a big motivation to get off my ass and put water in the tank.

Part to the hobby, try to recover from crash of full SPS tank worth few thousands of $$$, you really got to be motivated to keep it going. Live and learn. :)

The problem is that sometimes you have no idea what happened ... so you didn't learn anything. =) Sometimes chit just happens and you didn't change anything. You just start over and hope it doesn't happen again.

That's the reason for going much slower with the 75. Generally better to get a feel for reefing with softies/LPS. That way you get to see how your tank reacts to things, how to fix them, and how to prepare for future issues with a greater margin of error.

Maybe, but I believe there is a reason for everything, you look long enough and you might just find a problem and solution. Unfortunately hope doesn't get you far in anything. :)

I would try to refrain from moving everything around trying to find a shrimp and goby pair. The shrimp may have molted and will hide for a few days to a week depending on how fast he hardens again. Moving things around typically do more harm them good and more stress.

Another thing you should do, and Ted is very lightly nudging you to it, but you should slowly add more to a fish tank and it seems you are quick to add a lot, all the time. This hobby is slow and requires lots of patience. Keep up your chin.

Thanks, Gary. I haven't moved anything around. If they show up, they show up.

Sorry... I might have made it seem like we moved things around because I said we looked everywhere for them. I just meant we looked around the tank. Oops. :culpability:

Have you guys seen any worms in there? I had a fulgida in my tank that kept killing snails, crabs, fishes and corals. I don't think emerald crabs attack clams like that unless the clam is already dying from other causes.

Here's a link of the fulgida I caught: http://www.chicagoreefs.com/forums/showthread.php?21030-Evil-Oenone-Fulgida-worm

I've lost a lot of corals and fishes back when I had a 29g without a chiller when the temp spiked up. Just charge it to experience and keep at it.. :)

Take a red light and look in your tank at night and see if there is any bad pest killing them, alot of bad things only come out at night to feed.

The clams most likely cause of desk is either pyramid snails, or stress from the new tanks, nipping, water quality or a little bit of everything, somethings things just don't do well where they are.
