My 90g Oceanic TECH build

Hello all,

This is actually my first forum post since 2005 when I had a few smaller nano-tanks, but now I'm setting up my 90g which will focus on SPS /LPS mixed with some zoa's. I actually stumbled across this forum recently and have been enjoying reading and viewing everyone's tanks. Looking forward to hopefully meeting some reefers that I can eventually swap frags and what not with!

Anyways, I'm a long time fishhead, first tanks dating back to early 80's, first wet/dry sump was in 85 or so, boy those were the days! haha...not... I have had numerous tanks over the years, fresh & salt water. I decided to do things VERY slow this time and have been slowly building, purchasing and planning my set up.

My tank has currently been running live for about 2 weeks, so I will post some photos of the previous few months as I built my stand and LED lights, etc. Then I will add more photos to get caught up to it's current state! I've tried to research and plan out just about every phase of my set up, for ease of operation and cleaning, but as usual, I'm finding out I overlooked or over thought a few things!

With that said, hopefully I get some comments, ideas, flames, whatever! I have a few black perc's and a yellow eye kole tang currently, I jump started my cycle and had diatom bloom in 5 days, fish ready at the 2 week mark and these fish were added within the last few days. I also jump started the seeding process with a huge cleaner crew from indo-pacific sea farms and some chaeto / caleurpa in the fuge. So basically not adding any more fish until the pod and other micro organism colonies have reached a decent population.

Ok, so... On to the set up.

I scoured craigslist until I found the tank I wanted, the Oceanic TECH series has always been one of my favorite glass aquariums, with the starphire front glass, euro-bracing, 4 hole overflow and sexy black silicone seams, LOVE IT! The deal came with a ton of great equipment, which I decided to obviously use most of it. My only regret so far is that the guy I got it from used 3 mag 9.5's when he had his set up running, one for return, another for the skimmer and one for the chiller, which also fed the tank. I did not want to have the heat of 3 mags running in my sump, so I decided to retro fit the eshopps sump that was also included. I now wish I had just got a single larger external pump to feed everything, but it works good enough for now.

90g Oceanic TECH
Custom made stand with light hanger
eshopps 36" sump - I modified it to include a fuge and had a pretty major repair as I broke it during a mock freshwater run to test for leaks
Mag 9.5 x3 - externally plumbed
MP40 x2 (running reef crest anti-sync with occasional wave pulses)
Aqua-C EV180 (with Aqua-C waste collector)
Neptune Aqua Controller with temp and PH probe
JBJ ATO with 6g reservoir (dosing Kalk)
98% schedule 80 plumbing and fittings (I hate white pvc!)
Spectrepure RO/DI set up with Brute storage/ Mixing station (enjoyed making this) I still have to use buckets for now though!
Red Sea Coral Pro salt @ 1.025 (Anyone use this?? Please chime in with your experience!!)
GroupBuyLED (Milad is a BEAST!) - DIY LED Set up (I will be doing a step by step later on this, I had some learning curve issues!)
Chiller - (Barely runs with the external pumps and LED's) temps stay between 76.8 and 78, chiller is set for 78 lol
Sump light is a Menard's $5 dollar fixture(removed the dome) and a 30 dollar LED spot light @ 5k (I may search for a 6.5k bulb if this one doesn't do the trick)
Roughly 60 LBS of BRS Pukani "reefsaver" rock
80 LBS of live sand in Display and 20 LBS in fuge

I think that is about it. Now to get some photos uploaded and a nice Avatar and to start getting involved on these boards! Thanks for reading!

Almost forgot!! I used Herbie's overflow idea and HOLY $%*#!!! My tank is as quiet as my old nano's were. I have a minimum of 1.400 gph going through the main display with the 2 9.5's and the overflow is not only dead silent but I have ZERO bubbles entering my sump... Bye Bye salt creep!! Thanks Herbie, you're the man!

Thanks guys, I need to reduce image size before posting haha, sorry about that. Tried to edit it, fail... I'll do better on the next series of pics.

That looks really nice... I wish I had taken the time to set mine up that nice the first time through :)

Haha, not "the" Herbie, right??? I have changed a few things, but it runs pretty darn good so far, just wish I had the single pump running everything. The union valves will help with quick disconnect if one should fail or need cleaning, but not much room, unfortunately. I will update with some more recent photos tomorrow. These photos were taken with a fresh water mock run I did for a few days to test plumbing, etc.

Wow, the tank is looking awesome, Doug! I can't wait to see you stock it with some sticks and fish, but for now, I'm thoroughly enthralled with the quality of your build. Keep it up, man!

BTW, how large of an external pump are you looking for? Both Joe L and I have Iwakis that might help you simplify things.

Thanks for the compliment Ben! I'm dying to put sticks and fish in lol...only 3 fish so far =/ As far as the pump goes, I sure wish I had started this thread BEFORE I launched her!! I would have loved to buy a used pump to simplify the return. There is a good possibility of us moving this summer closer in to Chicago, which is good and bad I guess.. I probably should have waited to start this reef, but if I take my time these first few months I will have very little livestock to move and MAYBE at that time, if you guys still have a pump around I will hit you up for one! I'm not real certain on size of the pump I need, I'm guessing around 1,400 gph, because I will need to feed both tank returns and the chiller, which has a minimum recommended flow rate of 480 gph. I will need to do more math on that! Thanks again Ben and everyone else who has viewed and / or left a comment.

I'm getting so many ideas viewing everyone's reefscapes and set ups. I'm kind of old school where I like a solid wall of reef as opposed to the small islands on either side, but I set mine up with minimal if any dead spots (Yay vortechs!), so hopefully it starts looking better as I get some "sticks" in there. ;)

I picked up a few frags from AquaPros and had a HUGE swarm of copepods take over the tank, she's getting there!! My photos are all turning out blue and craptastic. I seriously need to get a new camera. I will post pics ASAP! Been super busy. Everyone have a safe and fun holiday weekend!!
